Is It Okay to Wake Up Your Hamster?

Since hamsters sleep an upwards of 14 hours a day, there may come a time when you need to wake your hamster from its slumber or you accidentally awaken it from nap time. Startling your hamster should be avoided if at all possible as this could cause your hamster to bite you and disturb its normal sleep-wake cycle. If this happens on a regular basis, it could stress your hamster and contribute to health issues as well. Unless you need to administer medications or something else that is time-sensitive, it's best to try and interact with your hamster only when it is already awake, rather than trying to make it adjust to your schedule.

RODENT KEEPING TIPS

Specific Substrate and Nesting Needs

Lined with mouse bedding such as wood pulp or paper-based materials. Some mice are prone to getting breathing problems so choose bedding that's is dust-free. Check it's safe for small pets, as cedar and pine woodchips are toxic. You can buy suitable bedding from pet shops or from our online pet store.

A paper substrate is an excellent material that allows mice to build a complex nest, preferable to cotton squares or rolls. Mice can shred the paper sheets and carry out the required tasks needed to form a complex nest.

FOOD FOR RODENTS

Fruits: Mice enjoy and can eat a variety of different fruits. Some mice will develop preferences to certain items, but you can offer your mouse apples, pears, bananas, melons, peaches, plums, oranges, and berries just to name a few.

Vegetables: There are also many fresh vegetable options that can be fed to mice. Broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, endive, carrots, bok choy/other Asian greens, celery, parsley, corn, beans, peas, and tomatoes can all be used.

Rats clean themselves so much that they are said to be cleaner than dogs and cats! Rats can swim or wade in the water for up to three days without drowning! They like to swim and are very good at it.

RODENT KEEPING TIPS

Introducing Mice To Each Other

Always introduce mice on neutral territory such as a cage that has been thoroughly cleaned and contains neither mouse’s scent. This should then be set up with lots of interesting places and objects to explore.

A few hidey-holes will offer welcome refuge, but make sure that you can intervene and remove the mice if a fight breaks out. Once the cage is set up, the mice can be placed in at the same time.

Usually they’ll just walk straight past each other and explore their new surroundings. It can take between one hour to two days for the mice to develop a bond. You should be able to tell if the mix is likely to work within the first hour.

Hamsters usually sleep for about 12-14 hours a day1 but, unlike humans who typically sleep once a day, hamsters have polyphasic sleep-wake patterns. This means that they sleep multiple times a day so this 12-14 hours will be broken up into smaller segments throughout the day.

Pet Food

If it’s good enough for your dog or cat, it’s good enough for your rats and mice. They won’t limit themselves to cat and dog food, either. Expect mice and rats to be interested in anything you feed any other animal including grains, seed, hay, fish food and so on.

Rats take care of injured and sick rats in their group, with
companionship rats tend to become lonely and depressed.
The urge to conform is so strong that they will even choose to eat unpalatable food if they are in the company of other rats who are eating it.
