The Chow Chow is one of the few breeds that genuinely doesn’t need you.
Unlike most dogs who evolved to look to humans for cues and approval, the Chow was bred in ancient China as a multi-purpose working dog hunting, herding, pulling sleds, and guarding and that independence is baked into their DNA. They’re often described as cat-like, and that’s accurate: they’re loyal to their people but on their own terms, they don’t perform affection, and they have a long memory for bad experiences.
What makes them fascinating from a behavior standpoint is that their aloofness is frequently misread as aggression or dominance, when it’s really just… indifference. They weren’t bred to want your approval, so the usual reward structures in training take longer to land. They respond, but they respond when they’ve decided it’s worth it.
