🤒 Kidney disease is not just an old dog problem.
You might think that decreased kidney function is simply a part of aging. Unfortunately, kidney disease can affect dogs of any age.
Kidney problems may develop suddenly as acute kidney injury due to conditions such as urinary obstruction (e.g., urinary stones, urethral plugs, or tumors), infections (e.g., leptospirosis or blood parasite-related complications), severe dehydration, heatstroke, or toxin ingestion.
Other cases develop gradually over time as chronic kidney disease (CKD). Some dogs may be born with congenital or inherited kidney abnormalities, while others develop kidney damage from chronic disease processes. In many cases, signs only become noticeable once significant kidney damage has already occurred.
Some signs of kidney disease include:
⚠️ Increased thirst and urination
⚠️ Weight loss
⚠️ Vomiting
⚠️ Decreased appetite
⚠️ Lethargy
⚠️ Bad breath
If you notice any of these signs, have your pet assessed by a veterinarian. 🩺
