Native animals are preferred by consumers as they have adapted to the natural climate and are more resistant to disease, resilient to weather extremes, and are able to reproduce with minimal human intervention.

With this in mind, DOST-PCAARRD through its Livestock Research Division has been implementing R&D projects focused on the development of breeding true-to-type of native chicken, duck, and pig. The goal is to produce native animals sustainably with the desired traits, resulting in predictable production performance and consistent product quality.

As of today, the native animals purified include 6 native chicken pure lines (Darag, ZamPen, Caraga Black, Boholano, Bolinao, and Paraoakan) 1 ItikPINAS commercial line (IP Kayumanggi), 2 ItikPINAS pure lines (IP-Itim and IP-Khaki), and 8 native pigs (Yookah, Benguet, Q-Black, Sinirangan, Markaduke, ISUbela, Central Luzon, and Bagu).

Our Zampen chickens have finally arrived instantly brought energy into the farm. This breed originated from the Zamboanga Peninsula and was developed by Western Mindanao University, bred to thrive in the country’s tropical climate. Because of this, they’re known for being hardy, fast growing, and reliable for meat production. Watching them explore their new space and hearing their soft chirps brings a quiet kind of excitement it marks the beginning of a new cycle of care, learning and hopefully a good harvest ahead. It’s a simple moment but one that feels full of promise.
