On October 10, 2025, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) added six more animal species to its Extinct category, a painful reminder of how rapidly human actions are reshaping our planetโs biodiversity.
Gone forever are the Christmas Island shrew and cone snail (Conus lugubris), unseen since the 1980s, and the slender-billed curlew, last recorded in Morocco in 1995. In Australia, three mammals, the South-western barred bandicoot, South-eastern striped bandicoot, and Nullarbor barred bandicoot, have also vanished, driven by habitat loss and predation from introduced species.
Today, the IUCN counts 48,646 species as threatened with extinction. Even Arctic seals are slipping closer to danger due to climate change, while 61% of bird species worldwide continue to decline.
