I was recently asked about official terms that can be used for "hot spot" in a medical record.
โก๏ธPyotraumatic dermatitis
โก๏ธAcute moist dermatitis
These โ๏ธare the most common medical terms to use. These are red, inflamed skin lesions that appear quickly. There are many reasons that acute moist dermatitis can occur. But some form of allergy is most common. Most commos sites are the limbs, head and hip (pictured).
There are many treatments that can be helpful and they are almost always infected. I have really focused on alternative treatments for the infection if possible (topicals, Phovia, etc.). However, I can't stress enough how important it is to know the underlying cause. In this dog, I suspect a flea allergy caused the lesion on the hip. So I am not going to be able to successfully manage it without quality ectoparasite control.
So always dig into the pet's history and educate the owner on the underlying causes!
