Lapaz fisherfolk upgrade crab farming practices to vertical crab fattening system
The Department of Science and Technology, through the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) Program, introduces the vertical crab fattening system utilizing the Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) technology to the Ingore-Baldoza Fisherfolks Association of La Paz, Iloilo City.
This innovation is expected to significantly increase fisherfolksโ income by enabling higher stocking density, faster growth of mud crabs, and reduced mortality rates. It lessens dependence on tidal conditions and seasonal availability, ensuring more consistent and year-round production while promoting efficient water use and improved biosecurity to minimize disease risks and environmental impact.
Under this system, mud crabs are housed in vertically arranged individual containers, where water is continuously filtered and recirculated through mechanical and biological filtration processes. The association operates 100 containers, each holding one mud crab, allowing better monitoring, reduced cannibalism, and higher survival rates. This controlled environment maintains optimal water quality and oxygen levels, supporting efficient crab growth.
This DOST-CEST project is implemented by DOST Iloilo in partnership with Taytay sa Kauswagan, Inc., with the support of the Iloilo City Government-Agriculture Office and the Local Government Unit of Brgy. Ingore, La Paz, Iloilo City.
By applying science, technology, and innovation such as the RAS, fisherfolks become more empowered to improve productivity, ensure sustainability, and increase their income.
