🚨🐾 LEPTOSPIROSIS: NOT JUST A RISK TO YOUR PET — IT CAN AFFECT HUMANS TOO! 🌧️🦠
Did you know that Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to people?
Dogs and other animals can become infected with Leptospira bacteria, which may be shed in their urine. The bacteria can contaminate water, soil, mud, and surfaces—especially after heavy rains and flooding.
⚠️ HOW CAN HUMANS BE EXPOSED?
• Contact with contaminated floodwater or stagnant water
• Contact with contaminated soil or mud
• Contact with the urine of an infected animal
• Bacteria entering through cuts, wounds, or mucous membranes
👨👩👧👦 PROTECT YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR FURBABIES!
🐾 Avoid walking through floodwater whenever possible.
🧤 Wear protective gloves when cleaning areas potentially contaminated with animal urine.
🧼 Wash hands thoroughly after handling pets or cleaning their environment.
💧 Keep pets away from stagnant and potentially contaminated water.
💉 Keep your pets’ vaccinations up to date and consult your veterinarian about leptospirosis vaccination.
🚨 KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS IN PEOPLE:
Fever, headache, muscle aches, chills, vomiting, diarrhea, red eyes, and other flu-like symptoms may occur. More serious illness can affect the kidneys, liver, lungs, or other organs.
If you develop symptoms after possible exposure to contaminated water, soil, or an infected animal, seek medical attention promptly and tell your healthcare provider about the possible exposure.
💚🧡 Protecting our pets also means protecting our families.
Let’s stay informed, practice good hygiene, and take leptospirosis seriously—especially during the rainy season.
PREVENT. PROTECT. STAY AWARE. 🐶👨👩👧👦🐾
