On every third friday of May is not only a celebration of the beauty of wildlife, but a stark reminder of humanity’s responsibility to protect what cannot protect itself. National Endangered Species Day speaks for the voices slowly fading in forests, oceans, and skies due to human neglect, destruction, and greed. Every endangered species carries a vital purpose in this world, and every life lost is a silent warning that nature is suffering.

As vetmates, may we become the voices for conservation, action, and awareness. Extinction is permanent, and once a species disappears, no amount of regret can ever bring it back.

When disasters strike, our animals depend on us for safety, comfort, and survival. This National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day, the CMU College of Veterinary Medicine Student Council reminds every fur parent and animal caretaker that preparedness can save lives.

🐾 Identification
Ensure your pets wear collars with updated ID tags or have proper identification records. In emergencies, animals can become separated from their owners, and identification greatly increases the chance of reunion.

📂 Important Documents
Keep copies of vaccination records, medical history, ownership papers, and emergency contact information in a waterproof container or digital backup. These documents are essential during evacuation and rescue situations.

🎒Prepare a Go-Bag
Have an emergency kit ready for your pets containing food, water, medicines, leash, carrier, flashlight, sanitation supplies, and comfort items. A prepared go-bag helps meet your animal’s needs during sudden evacuations.

🏠 Practice Drills
Include your pets in household evacuation plans and emergency drills. Familiarity with carriers, commands, and evacuation routes can reduce stress and improve response during actual disasters.

Did you know? Some migratory birds travel thousands of kilometers across continents using the stars, Earth’s magnetic field, and even coastlines as their guide. 🕊️🌏 Some species fly nonstop for days just to reach warmer habitats, safer breeding grounds, and food sources essential for survival.

This World Migratory Bird Day, we celebrate these remarkable travelers of the sky and raise awareness on the importance of protecting wetlands, forests, and natural habitats that support their migration routes. Human activities such as pollution, habitat destruction, climate change, and illegal wildlife trade continue to threaten many migratory bird species worldwide.

As future stewards of animal health, wildlife, and the environment, let us continue promoting conservation efforts and coexistence with the species that connect ecosystems across borders. Every small action toward protecting nature helps keep their journeys possible. 💚🐦

This April 17, the CMU College of Veterinary Medicine Student Council joins the global community in celebrating International Bat Appreciation Day—recognizing bats not only for their ecological importance but also for their vital role in pollination, seed dispersal, and insect population control.

Often misunderstood, these remarkable creatures are indispensable allies in maintaining healthy ecosystems and supporting biodiversity.
