How often should you bathe your furbaby? ๐ค
1. The General Rule
For most healthy dogs with normal skin, once a month (every 4 weeks) is the sweet spot.
Why? Itโs frequent enough to keep the "doggy smell" away but infrequent enough that you aren't stripping the natural oils that keep their coat shiny and skin hydrated.
2. When to Bathe More Often (Every 1โ2 Weeks)
Allergies & Skin Issues: Dogs with yeast infections or environmental allergies often need medicated baths twice a week initially, then weekly. This depends on your veterinarian's advice. Please refrain from self-medicating as it can cause more harm than good.
The "Outside" Dog: If they are active in the mud, sand, or high-pollen areas, a weekly rinse or bath is fine as long as you use a soap-free, moisturizing shampoo.
3. When to Bathe Less Often (Every 2โ3 Months)
Water-Repellent Coats: Breeds like Labradors, Huskies, or Newfoundlands have "oily" double coats designed to shed water. Over-bathing these breeds can ruin the coat's insulating properties and lead to dry, itchy skin.
Short-Haired Breeds: Dobermans or Boxers often just need a good wipe down with a damp cloth or grooming mitt unless theyโve rolled in something foul.
