🐶 MYIASIS IN DOGS: A Small Wound Can Become a Bigger Problem
We recently treated a dog at Mitsuha Veterinary Clinic with myiasis, also known as maggot infestation of a wound.
This happens when flies lay eggs on an open, dirty, or moist wound. The eggs hatch into maggots, which can damage the skin and surrounding tissue if not treated early.
Pet owners should watch for signs such as:
• A wound that is not healing
• Foul-smelling discharge
• Swelling or redness
• Constant licking of the area
• Visible maggots
• Weakness or poor appetite in severe cases
Treatment includes removing the maggots, thoroughly cleaning the wound, and giving the proper medications and wound care needed for recovery.
If your pet has an open wound, have it checked early. Prompt treatment can help prevent infection, pain, and further tissue damage.
