One of the very first things we evaluate during a physical exam is mentation. Before blood tests, radiographs, or ultrasound, a patient’s level of awareness and responsiveness already tells us a great deal about the severity of disease.

One of the most uncomfortable moments in veterinary practice happens during referral cases. A patient arrives from another clinic, and instead of focusing on the pet, the consultation shifts into criticism of the previous veterinarian. Clients come in frustrated, emotional, sometimes angry. The easiest response is to nod along or silently accept the idea that the previous vet “failed.”

But here’s the truth: referral is not incompetence. Referral is professionalism.

Before you complain and accuse a clinic for charging “too much”, these are the things that you should consider.

You are not just paying for the meds and consumables used in the procedure. You are also paying for the machines and equipments being used. These machines has a worth of a property we couldn’t afford to buy yet because we prioritize the advancement of our facilities. You also pay for our time, years of education, and expertise. You pay for the sleepless nights that our nurses will look after the confined patients, the nights that the doctors will also wake up at midnights to check for updates and check on patients. You pay for our dedication being poured out to help a critically ill patient, and the emotional exhaustion it gives us specially on complicated cases that are not supposed to be complicated if the owner did not wait for weeks or months before seeking medical attention.

Yes, veterinary medicine is expensive. That is true. Who said that it must be cheap just because they are “just” animals, or “askal lang naman yan”. Having a pet comes with financial responsibilities as well, that is something you should consider before acquiring a pet, rather than putting all the pressure of giving discounts and pushing us to allow credits and promisory notes, later on labeling us as “mukhang pera” if we do not agree with the “request” that seems like a demand. Reasons why we do not allow credits anymore even if clients would swear that they are not the same as the other clients who will not pay credits, but later on turn out the same as them.

Some clients even think that if their critically ill patient dies under our care, they are not entitled to pay the bill. Where does that come from? We actually can no longer comprehend where this mindset comes from. Hindi po pustahan ang pinasok natin na kapag buhay, magbabayad, pag patay tatakbuhan ninyo kami. If you bring a sick patient, your money does not guarantee the survival, we are doctors, not God, veterinary medicine has its limitations.

Clinic protocols are made to be followed and strictly implemented, but there are times that clients manipulate too much, sometimes we consider compassion too much being left with emotional exhaustion if the client does not bind to the agreement. So please understand that our clinic will NEVER allow credits anymore.

Let us make veterinary practice a safer place for everyone. Be a responsible pet owner and stop putting all the pressure on us.

Not one more vet.

When Love Is Not the Problem: Reaching Filipino Pet Owners Who Care but Cannot Afford Full Vet Care

By Dr. Geoff Carullo, DVM, FPCCP, DPCVSCA

Filipinos are not lacking in love for animals.
If love were the only requirement, we would be one of the best pet loving countries in the world.

Many Filipino families sleep beside their dogs, treat their cats like babies, and cry real tears when a pet gets sick or dies. The heart is genuine.

But there is a painful gap.
On one side are pet owners from the masses who truly care, but struggle with rent, food, tuition, and daily survival. For them, even a “simple” vet bill can fe...
