The Iloilo City Government brought free animal health services to Brgy. Baldoza through the P.E.T.S. Program.

A total of 64 pet owners availed of free anti-rabies vaccination, while 19 dogs and cats were neutered, including three strays.

The activity was held ahead of World Rabies Day on September 28, promoting responsible pet ownership and community safety.

🐾🇧🇷 Brazil’s Law on Cruelty to Dogs and Cats

Brazil strengthened its animal-cruelty laws in September 2020 with Law No. 14,064. The law specifically increased the punishment for acts of abuse, mistreatment, injury or mutilation involving dogs and cats.

⚖️ Under the law, a person convicted of these offenses involving a dog or cat can face 2 to 5 years of imprisonment, a fine, and a prohibition on keeping animals.

Before this change, the general provision carried a much lighter penalty of 3 months to 1 year of detention plus a fine. The 2020 amendment specifically created the tougher 2–5 year penalty for dogs and cats.

🐶🐱 There is one important detail behind the viral post: this is not a new law introduced in 2026. It has been in force since September 2020. Also, the law concerns animal abuse/mistreatment, injury or mutilation—the viral wording about “hunting a dog or cat” is not an accurate description of the provision.

❤️ The law also provides that if the animal dies, the applicable penalty can be increased by one-sixth to one-third.
