🐾 Please meet Niall, a brave 9-year-old dog with Chronic Perineal Hernia. 🐶💙

Niall was brought to GoodHeart Veterinary Clinic because he was not eating, had no stool output, and had reduced urine output. During physical examination, we observed a large protruding swelling in the perineal area, which raised concern for a possible mass or perineal hernia.

To properly evaluate Niall’s condition, we performed an X-ray to help distinguish whether the swelling was a mass or a hernia. The results confirmed that Niall was suffering from a Perineal Hernia.

Before proceeding with surgery, we also performed important pre-operative tests, including:

✅ Complete Blood Count
✅ Blood Chemistry
✅ cNT-proBNP cardiac screening

These tests helped us assess Niall’s overall health and make sure he was fit and safer for anesthesia and surgery.

After careful evaluation, Niall underwent Perineal Hernia Repair Surgery.

One week after the procedure, Niall showed great improvement. He was already:

✅ Eating well
✅ Passing stool normally
✅ Urinating better
✅ Healing well from the surgical wound

Today, Niall is living more comfortably, happily, and with a much better quality of life. 💙🐾

📌 Educational Reminder:
Perineal hernia is commonly seen in older male dogs. Signs may include swelling near the a**s, difficulty defecating, constipation, straining, reduced appetite, and difficulty urinating. If left untreated, it may become painful and may lead to serious complications.

Early consultation, proper diagnostics, and timely treatment can make a big difference.

🐾 Case of the Day: Senior Dog with Enlarged Spleen and Bladder Stone

A 14-year-old male mixed breed dog was brought to GoodHeart Veterinary Clinic in a very weak condition. He was severely lethargic, recumbent, and unable to stand.

Upon physical examination, the patient was noted to have a distended abdomen, which required further diagnostic work-up. Our veterinary team performed intensive assessment including:

✅ Complete physical examination
✅ Complete Blood Count
✅ Blood Chemistry
✅ Ultrasound
✅ X-ray imaging

Based on the imaging findings, the patient was diagnosed with a markedly enlarged spleen and a bladder stone.

Because of the patient’s condition, immediate stabilization was done before surgery. After proper assessment and preparation, the patient underwent two major surgical procedures:

1. Splenectomy

Removal of the enlarged spleen.

2. Cystotomy

Surgical opening of the urinary bladder to remove the bladder stone.

After surgery, the patient was closely monitored during confinement. Thankfully, after 2 days, the patient showed good improvement. He was already able to urinate properly and started eating again.

This case shows the importance of early veterinary examination, diagnostic tests, and timely surgical intervention, especially in senior pets. Abdominal enlargement, weakness, difficulty standing, and urinary problems should never be ignored.

We are happy to see this brave senior patient recovering well. 💚🐾
