WHAT DOES YOUR DOG’S GUM COLOR TELL YOU?

Your dog’s gums can provide valuable clues about circulation, oxygenation, and overall health. A quick gum check can sometimes help you recognize a problem early.

🔹 1. Healthy Pink 🩷
Usually indicates normal blood flow and oxygenation.

🔹 2. Pale Pink ⚠️
May be associated with anemia, blood loss, poor circulation, or other conditions.

🔹 3. Yellow (Icteric) 🟡
May indicate jaundice, which can occur with liver disease, hemolysis, or biliary disorders.

🔹 4. Blue/Purple 🔵
May indicate cyanosis and inadequate oxygenation — this can be an emergency.

🔹 5. Bright Red 🔴
Can occur with gingivitis, inflammation, heat-related illness, toxin exposure, or other systemic problems.

🔹 6. Very Pale/White ⚪
May be associated with severe anemia, shock, poor perfusion, or significant blood loss and requires urgent veterinary assessment.

🚨 IMPORTANT: Gum color alone cannot diagnose a disease. Normal pigmentation can also make assessment difficult in some dogs. Look at the unpigmented mucosa and consider other signs such as breathing difficulty, weakness, collapse, vomiting, bleeding, or abnormal behavior.

❤️ If your dog’s gums suddenly change color or your dog is showing signs of illness, contact a veterinarian promptly.
