Puppy evaluation is the process of assessing a young puppy’s temperament, behavior, physical condition, learning ability, and potential to determine what type of training, activity, or future role may suit it.

To add, puppy evaluation can be particularly useful for identifying puppies that may have potential for search and rescue, detection, obedience, agility, protection sports, or other working roles.

Importantly, a puppy evaluation doesn't guarantee what the dog will become. Genetics, socialization, training, environment, and maturation can significantly change behavior as the dog grows.

A good evaluation is therefore best viewed as an early indicator of strengths and areas that need development, rather than a final judgment of the puppy.

Importance of Puppy Picking

1. Temperament matching – Helps identify a puppy whose personality fits the owner, whether the goal is companionship, sports, working, or protection.

2. Early behavior assessment – Puppies can show differences in confidence, sociability, curiosity, energy, and sensitivity even at a young age.

3. Better training outcomes – Choosing a puppy with suitable drives and temperament can make future training easier and more productive.

4. Lifestyle compatibility – A high-energy puppy may be ideal for an active owner but difficult for someone looking for a calm household companion.

5. Working or sports potential – For activities such as K9 work, agility, obedience, search and rescue, or other dog sports, puppy selection can help identify desirable traits such as focus, motivation, confidence, and environmental stability.

The main purposes are:

Builds confidence: Winning the tug occasionally helps the puppy become more confident and resilient.

Strengthens your bond: The puppy learns that interacting and playing with you is rewarding, making you more valuable than distractions.

Develops prey drive: Tug channels the puppy's natural instinct to chase and grab objects. This is useful in many dog sports and working dog disciplines.

Teaches self-control: You can teach commands like "Take it," "Out" (release), and "Wait," helping the puppy learn to switch between excitement and calmness.

Increases motivation: Many trainers use tug as a high-value reward during obedience training instead of treats.

Improves grip and coordination: Holding and pulling on the tug helps the puppy develop proper grip and body awareness.

Tips for safe tug play with a puppy

Use a soft tug toy designed for puppies.

Keep tug sessions short (2–5 minutes).

Pull side-to-side gently rather than jerking upward, especially while adult teeth are still developing.

Let the puppy win sometimes by allowing it to carry the toy away for a moment.

End the game while the puppy is still excited and wanting more.

Puppy desensitization is the gradual process of safely exposing a puppy to different sights, sounds, smells, surfaces, people, animals, and handling so that they learn to remain calm and confident instead of becoming fearful or reactive.

The goal is not to force the puppy to tolerate scary situations, but to introduce new experiences at a level the puppy is comfortable with, while creating positive associations through treats, toys, praise, or play.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME FOR DESENSITIZATION?

The ideal time is during the puppy's socialization period (about 3–16 weeks of age), when puppies are most receptive to new experiences. However, desensitization can still be done successfully with older dogs—it just may take more time and patience.

For working dogs, including search and rescue, police, or sport dogs, proper desensitization builds confidence and helps them remain focused in challenging environments, making it a fundamental part of early training.
