As Dipolog Veterinary Doctor continues to grow, so does the demand for other areas of veterinary medicine. One of these is the need for a veterinarian who can care for exotic pets and provide them with the specialized attention they deserve.

Rest assuredโ€”we heard you!

Here at Dipolog Veterinary Doctor, our licensed veterinarians never stop learning. We continuously improve our knowledge and skills so we can provide better care for your beloved pets. As part of this commitment, we have expanded our training to include avian and exotic animal medicine.

Dr. Ricky is among the participants who gained hands-on experience in avian and exotic animal medicine under the guidance of renowned exotic veterinarian Dr. Nielsen Donato (Co-host of Born To Be Wild)

The training covered basic husbandry, common diseases, safe handling, physical examinations, blood collection, intubation, treatment, and disease management for birds, small mammals, and reptiles.

From handling birds, guinea pigs, hedgehogs, turtles, tortoises, iguanas, and snakes, Dr. Ricky gained valuable practical experience in caring for a wide variety of exotic pets.

Because every pet deserves expert care โ€” whether they have fur, feathers, scales, or shells.

Slow progress is still progress.

This is NY. She was brought in by her concerned owners after they noticed she was suddenly unable to stand or move on all four limbs; she was only able to move her neck and head, also noting heavy panting.

Canine distemper was first ruled out by doing a quick antigen test. A neurologic evaluation was performed, which revealed absent and severely delayed proprioception on all limbs, a negative paniculus reflex, and an absent withdrawal reflex. A complete blood count and diagnostic panel test were performed. Fortunately, all laboratory tests were within the normal range except for mild hypoglycemia or low glucose level.

Radiographs were also taken to ensure there were no fractures. Thankfully, no fractures were observed. She was tentatively diagnosed with IVDD, or intervertebral disc disease, and treatment was then initiated.

She was confined for a couple of days until her condition improved, with the goal of her regaining her mobility.

Daily physical therapy was performed, along with photobiomodulation therapy and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation together with her medications.

Day by day, her condition gradually improved from not being able to move on her own to starting to be able to move her forelimbs. When she was strong enough to change position on her own, she was discharged with strict instructions given to her owners.

And today, on her follow-up visit, we were all very impressed that she could actually walk on her own. That just shows that with the proper treatment and unconditional love from her owners, miracles can happen.

Hereโ€™s a photo of NY, her owners, and her handling vet, Dr. Ricky.

Senior Dog Needs Extra Love.

This is K. She has had a mass on her caudal teat for awhile, but it recently started to affect her quality of life as it has become tender, and her owners were concerned that it might ulcerate.

Upon discussing her case with her handling vet, it was mentioned that the mass needed to be removed because of its size and location, which made it prone to ulcerations. Kโ€™s owners weren't too keen on having their senior dog undergo surgery, so they needed time to think about it.

Unfortunately, two days after the initial consultation, the mass ulcerated. Thatโ€™s when they made the decision for K to undergo the surgery. Before the surgery was scheduled, it was recommended that she undergo pre-operative screening to detect any underlying diseases or possible metastasis in her lungs or adjacent lymph nodes.

Luckily, all pre-operative tests showed normal results, and the fine needle biopsy of the regional lymph nodes and chest X-rays were negative for metastasis.

Her surgery went very well, but her owners opted to confine her for the duration of her wound healing to prevent complications.

This is K and her handling veterinarian, Dr. Shawndee, after her last wound dressing and laser therapy session.

Emergency cesarean section with ovariohysterectomy due to prolonged labor.

This is M.
She was brought to us as an emergency case due to dystocia. She whelped three kittens normally at home but had trouble delivering the last kitten on her own.

When she was assessed, it was suspected that the remaining kitten had already passed because of the foul smell exuding from her v***a. It was recommended that she undergo a cesarean section to remove the remaining fetus.

After discussing treatment options with her owner, it was brought up that if they were not planning to breed her, it would be best to have her undergo OVH (ovariohysterectomy) or spay, which they readily agreed to.

The surgery was performed without any complications, and she was discharged 24 hours after she underwent major surgery.

Here's a photo of M, together with her owner and handling veterinarian Dr. Rhianne.

Perineal Urethrostomy

P has experienced multiple episodes of urinary obstruction, requiring catheterization. His owners became concerned that he might develop acute kidney injury (AKO) if he gets a urinary obstruction again.

After discussing his options with his veterinarian, Dr. Shawndee, they decided to proceed with a perineal urethrostomy.

A perineal urethrostomy is a life-saving surgical procedure for male cats with recurrent urinary blockages. Thankfully, the procedure was completed without complications, and P recovered very well from general anesthesia.

According to Pโ€™s furparents, he is doing very well at home and can now urinate without difficulty. Here is a photo of P, his furparents, and Dr. Shawndee.

P and W survives the deadly canine parvo virus! ๐Ÿถ

These little ones were brought in as an emergency case due to bloody diarrhea, vomiting, anorexia, and lethargy. ๐Ÿคข๐Ÿคฎ๐Ÿค’๐Ÿ’ฉ

After testing positive for canine parvo, treatment was initiated as quickly and as aggressively as possible to correct fluid loss and electrolyte imbalance, control nausea and vomiting, manage pain, provide parenteral nutrition, and to address neutropenia. ๐Ÿค•

They needed intensive care and monitoring for a few days as they were still experiencing ongoing fluid loss through vomiting and diarrhea.

But thankfully, after a couple of days of confinement, both puppies bounced back and started to regain their appetite and activity.

Both puppies' treatment and management were under the care of senior veterinarian Dr. Rhianne, with the help of vet technologists Mackoy and Cyrus. ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ

See you on your follow-up dates, P and W! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’™

After being attacked by another dog this puppy was immediately brought in for a check up.

Upon physical examination her handlng vet observed that everything was normal aside from bruising and crepitus on the patients right thoracic area.

The patients vitals signs were all within normal including heart rate, respiratory rate, SPO2, re**al temperature and blood pressure. Auscultation also revealed no abnormal lung sounds.

With that, her handling vet recommended a complete blood count and a chest radiograph.

Low and behold the patient had suffered multiple fractured ribs and subcutaneous emphysema.

The patient was recommended for hospitalization wherein she received medical care ensuring adequate ventilation and oxygenation, pain maagement, and monitoring of dysrhythmia and development of what is called a flail chest.

After a couple of days of treatment, the subcutaneous emphysema went a way, the patients appetite and activity level improved. And before she was discharge it was made sure that her vitals were within normal range.

Thank you, Dr. Lyko for taking good care of Baby T. ๐Ÿคฉ
