Beyond the diverse wildlife found across the Philippines, the country is also home to remarkable birds of prey that play an important role in maintaining ecological balance. One of these is the Philippine White-bellied Sea Eagle (Icthyophaga leucogaster).
The White-bellied Sea Eagle is widely distributed across coastal and inland waters of the Indo-Pacific region, including the Philippines. It inhabits coastal forests, mangroves, islands, and areas near rivers and lakes, where it relies on healthy ecosystems for hunting and nesting [1].
Recognized by its contrasting white head, breast, and tail, along with its dark grey wings, the White-bellied Sea Eagle is a large bird of prey belonging to the family Accipitridae. It is an opportunistic predator, feeding primarily on fish and occasionally hunting birds, reptiles, and small mammals. It is also known for its impressive wingspan and ability to soar over coastal waters in search of prey [2].
Despite its adaptability and broad distribution, the species remains dependent on suitable nesting sites and healthy aquatic ecosystems. Habitat degradation, human disturbance, and pollution can affect its survival, highlighting the importance of protecting coastal and forest habitats.
