BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS IN DOGS:
Why, When & How

Just like humans, dogs sometimes need blood transfusions to save their lives. Blood transfusions are emergency procedures performed when a dog has lost a significant amount of blood or is suffering from severe anemia.

Did you know?
Dogs have blood types too! The most important blood type system is DEA 1, which can be either positive or negative. Proper blood typing helps reduce the risk of transfusion reactions and ensures the safest possible treatment.

When Does a Dog Need a Blood Transfusion?

A blood transfusion may be necessary for dogs suffering from:

Anemia due to blood parasites such as Ehrlichiosis, Anaplasmosis and Babesiosis.
Anemia caused by intestinal parasites such as hookworms and roundworms.
Severe blood loss from trauma or accidents
Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA)
Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC)
Blood loss during surgery
Bleeding disorders
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

While blood transfusions can be life-saving, it is equally important to diagnose and treat the underlying cause of blood loss or anemia.

Become a Canine Blood Donor

At Pluma Veterinary Clinic, we are happy to welcome healthy dogs as blood donors and help save the lives of other dogs in need.

Donor Qualifications

Healthy and friendly temperament
Age: 1–8 years old (some healthy dogs may be accepted up to 10 years old)
Weight: 25 kg or more
Ideal body condition
Fully vaccinated
Regular parasite prevention
No previous blood transfusions
Free from chronic illnesses
Not taking medications that may affect blood quality

Pre-Donation Screening

All donor candidates undergo screening, which may include:

Physical examination
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
Blood typing (DEA 1 if available)
Heartworm testing
Screening for Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, Anaplasmosis, and other blood-borne diseases
Serum biochemistry (recommended)

After Donation
Donors are monitored and advised to avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours.

Donation Frequency
Eligible dogs may donate approximately every 3 months.

One donation can help save multiple canine lives.

Too Late to Handle… Glaucoma Can Cause Blindness 👁️🐶

A sweet 8-year-old female Poodle named Princess was brought to the clinic for an eye check-up. She had already been receiving eye drops and oral medications for several months from another veterinary clinic. Princess was also diagnosed with a heart condition and has been continuously taking maintenance medications.

Unfortunately, despite ongoing treatment, her eye condition did not improve, and she continued to experience pain and discomfort.

After thorough examination, the attending veterinarian explained that the eye could no longer be saved. Since the glaucoma had already progressed for several months, the best option recommended to improve Princess’ comfort and quality of life was eye enucleation (eye removal surgery).

👁️ What is Glaucoma in Dogs?

Glaucoma is a serious and painful eye disease caused by increased pressure inside the eye due to improper fluid drainage. Without immediate treatment, it can rapidly lead to permanent blindness and severe pain.

⚠️ Glaucoma is considered a medical emergency.

Signs of Glaucoma in Dogs:

• Redness of the eye
• Cloudy or bluish appearance
• Squinting or excessive blinking
• Enlarged or bulging eye
• Pawing or rubbing the eye
• Dilated pupil
• Signs of pain, lethargy, or decreased appetite

Treatment Options:

✔️ Eye medications
✔️ Oral medications
✔️ Surgical procedures
✔️ Enucleation (eye removal) if the eye is already blind and painful

💡 Important Reminder:
Acute glaucoma can cause blindness within 24–48 hours if left untreated. Early diagnosis and treatment are very important to help preserve vision and reduce pain.

If your pet shows signs of eye redness, cloudiness, swelling, or discomfort, please seek veterinary attention immediately.

Sometimes saving the eye is no longer possible — but relieving pain and giving comfort is still one of the greatest acts of love and care we can provide for our pets.

✨ We chose to give Princess hope and a more comfortable life rather than letting her continue to endure pain just to keep the affected eye. Dogs can still live happy, normal, and beautiful lives even with one eye.

Seeing Princess finally go home comfortably with her loving furparents truly warmed our hearts. 💖🐶
