WIN SOME, LOSE SOME

This was my reality 4 months after my DBS implantation—a wound that refused to heal for more than a year.

I fought to save my DBS. Different antibiotics, treatments, procedures, and months of hoping that the wound would finally close.

Eventually, the infection won.

The DBS Medtronic device had to be removed.

And then something remarkable happened.

Within just 4 weeks after the removal, the wound finally healed.

But there was a price.

Without the DBS, my Parkinson’s medication had to be increased dramatically, and even with the increased medication, the benefit lasts only about 2½ hours before the symptoms start coming back. Wearing-off and shorter medication benefit are recognized problems in Parkinson’s as the disease progresses.

So here I am.

The wound healed.
But Parkinson’s became harder to manage.

I lost my DBS, but I gained a healed scalp.

I lost medication freedom, but I gained freedom from an infection that wouldn’t let me heal.

Sometimes life doesn’t give you a complete victory.

You win some. You lose some.

But as long as I’m still standing,
I’m still fighting. 👊

A Wound That Wouldn’t Heal

Four months after my DBS Medtronic implantation, this was the reality I was living with.

What started as a small wound on my scalp became a battle that lasted more than a year. I went through different antibiotics, treatments, procedures, and countless moments of hoping that the wound would finally heal.

But it kept coming back.

The red tissue, the drainage, the uncertainty, and the constant worry were always there. I tried everything possible to save my DBS, because that device had given me hope for a better quality of life with Parkinson’s.

But eventually, the infection won.

I had to make the difficult decision to have the DBS hardware removed.

Looking back at these photographs reminds me how much I endured—not only physically, but emotionally.

Sometimes healing means accepting that you have to let go of something you fought so hard to keep.

I may have lost my DBS, but I did not lose my fight.

Parkinson’s may have changed my journey, but it will never define how far I’m willing to go. 👊

Even though I’m a thousand miles away from my pack, I always make sure there is peace, order, and balance among them.

Exercise and discipline create stability. Affection comes when I’m with them.

Distance doesn’t stop a pack leader from leading. 🐾

I tried everything I could to save my DBS device, but the infection ultimately won.

Last Thursday, I had surgery to remove the DBS.

It’s been a tough journey, but I’m deeply grateful to my medical team and everyone who has supported me along the way. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, we have to let go of what we fought so hard to keep.

Now I’m focusing on healing and recovery, one day at a time. 🙏

Choconut the Staffy used to get excited very easily. And excitement, when unmanaged, can create chaos — and chaos can lead to accidents.

That’s exactly what happened before, when he got so excited that he ran into my friend’s leg and injured her knee.

But this is what happens when a dog’s life is truly fulfilled — through structure, guidance, and the support of the pack.

Look at him now. Calm, balanced, and in control. Even the excitement of kids around him doesn’t affect him anymore.

A fulfilled dog doesn’t need to create chaos. Balance changes everything. Souls.care
