A blocked male cat is a life-threatening medical emergency requiring immediate veterinary intervention, often fatal within 24โ€“48 hours if untreated. Symptoms include straining in the litter box with little/no urine, painful vocalizing, vomiting, and hiding. Thereโ€™s something we use in vet med called a quality of life scale.

Itโ€™s not about giving up. Itโ€™s about making sure theyโ€™re still living, not just existing. You need to use your best judgment and guide the clients to the right choice. This is how they come to be at peace with their decision: you walk them through it.

Ask these 5 things about your pet or your client's pet:

1. Are they eating and drinking normally?
(or only because youโ€™re pushing it)
2. Can they get up, walk, and move without struggling?
3. Are they still interested in things they used to love?
(toys, food, people, going outside)
****4. Are they having more good days than bad days?*****
5. Do they seem comfortableโ€ฆ or are they in pain more often than not?

If youโ€™re answering โ€œnoโ€ to most of theseโ€ฆ
it might be time to have a conversation with your vet.

Meet ๐“๐จ๐›๐ข, a brave boy who recently gave his family a bit of a scare, but is now on the mend!

Tobi originally came to see us because he was struggling with ๐ก๐ž๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ข๐š (blood in the urine) and ๐๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ข๐š (straining to urinate) that seemed to come and go. While we did find some sediments in his urinary bladder, our exam led to a deeper discovery: an inflamed irregularly-shaped right testicle.

After a successful castration surgery and a biopsy, it was confirmedโ€”Tobi had a ๐’๐ž๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐จ๐ฆ๐š.

๐Ÿ” ๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐š ๐’๐ž๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐จ๐ฆ๐š?
A seminoma is a common type of testicular tumor in male dogs. The good news? They are usually slow-growing and have a very low rate of spreading to other parts of the body.

While Tobi showed urinary distress, many dogs don't show any pain at all! Here is what pet parents should look out for:

โ€ข ๐€๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ž๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐ฌ๐ฐ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ : One testicle appearing larger or firmer than the other.

โ€ข ๐ˆ๐ง๐Ÿ๐ž๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ: In breeding dogs.

โ€ข ๐’๐ž๐œ๐จ๐ง๐๐š๐ซ๐ฒ ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ž๐ฌ: Like Tobi, some dogs experience urinary discomfort if the tumor or related inflammation affects the tract.

โ€ข ๐‚๐ซ๐ฒ๐ฉ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐œ๐ก๐ข๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ฆ: Dogs with undescended testicles are at a much higher risk!

The gold standard treatment for a seminoma is ๐œ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง (neutering). For most dogs, this surgery is 100% curative!

Tobi is now recovering beautifully. By removing the source of the tumor, weโ€™ve cleared the path for him to get back to his happy, healthy self.
