We are a network of volunteers that do the best they can every night to save cats and kittens from the NYC ACC. We are NOT affliated with the shelter, we do not kill them.
How it works: A new "To Be Destroyed" list comes out every night between 5:30-6:30 pm. If there is a cat or kitten you can adopt..call the ACC number if it is BEFORE 8pm. You will HAVE to pick up that cat first thing in the morning. They will not hold the cat they will kill it. The only way they will hold it for 24 hours is if an approved rescue calls that cat in. Go to the the shelter in which the cat is located. If you cannot make it to the city..you again can get an approved rescuer to pull and there is a possibility of transport. If you have any questions please ask on the page. We have many "seasoned" helpers who can direct you on the page.

DO NOT CALL THE SHELTER TO HOLD A CAT OR TO ASK FOR EXTRA TIME FOR A CAT UNLESS YOU ARE THE ADOPTER and will follow through in getting the cat yourself. WE REPEAT: ONLY CALL TO ADOPT IF YOU CAN GO GET THE CAT ASAP YOURSELF at the time frame given to you by the shelter staff person, usually on the same day as the elist date. Otherwise get a rescue to help you.

Please be advised that PODR will no longer promote or help to arrange any long distance rescue and transport beyond the northeast area and even then only what is deemed plausibly safe outside of our local NY area for that particular cat given his circumstances. It is up to each individual rescue group how far they would be willing to transport a cat. We obviously cannot stop anyone from pursuing an individual long distance rescue, but that person or rescue must do so off our PODR threads and site or they will be blocked. Everyone, please understand how very appreciative we all are on PODR of our many friends from all over the country wanting to help in the rescue efforts of our NYC shelter cats and hope you continue to help by sharing, advocating, sponsoring and donating whenever possible. We also hope you understand and support our decision as we believe being in the best interest of our already ill, traumatized, vulnerable shelter animals. Many are coming out of the shelter much sicker than reported and require months of fostering and recuperation to properly allow their immune systems to rebuild. To then thrust them into the stresses of long distance travel is a risk we can no longer support. Finally, we want to encourage you to consider going to your own local area shelters to adopt/foster/volunteer as your local, abandoned, homeless animals are just as needy and deserving of a rescue as ours are in NYC. Again, we sincerely thank you all!
