The Little Prince 👑✨️

One of the things that makes the genus Tulista distinct from its close relatives (Haworthia and Haworthiopsis) is that they grow larger. So this little prince will surely reach a size fit for its given cultivar name: 'Emperor'.

The recent cool weather has triggered this Haworthiopsis "Nagoriyuki A" to start flowering.

This Japanese cultivar is a cross between Haworthiopsis koelmaniorum and Tulista pumila, meaning it is an intergeneric hybrid. This type of hybrid is produced from the breeding of two species under different genera.

Happy Easter Sunday everyone!

Featuring one of our Haworthiopsis koelmaniorum mother plants that sort of "resurrected".

She went dormant and turned brown earlier this year. Days of straight cool weather brought by the recent tropical storms woke her up and now she's almost back to full green!

Wonder if she stays awake now that its warm again.

Multiple Agave plants of a certain species found along the road somewhere in Tuburan, Cebu.

Suprised to see them thriving in our climate since Agaves are non-native here and are much more adapted to arid areas in North and South America.

From afar, these look like Agave sisalana, a likely guess since this species has been introduced to many countries including the Philippines for its fiber primarily used to make ropes.

Some comments we've read are disappointing, painting snakes in a a bad light as well as blaming the Philippine Eagle Center (PEC) for supposedly insecure cages.

First of all, you can never blame the snake for doing one of the things it naturally has to do: feed itself. They're not like us, they can't tell right from wrong.

Second, the PEC is one of the country's premier conservation centers. They're the only ones to have successfully bred Philippine eagles in captivity and they've done it multiple times! We had the chance to participate in an online private tour of the place during the first year of lockdown and learned that their team is a mix of international and local conservation experts. The eagles are well taken care of and are house in top-of-the-line enclosures. Each of their eagles are financially "adopted" by major corporations and personalities here in the Philippines.

Also, anyone who has held giant constrictors like the reticulated python in this report can feel that almost the entire length of their bodies is all pure muscle. Having evolved no legs, they are effective at using their whole muscular bodies to break in and out of anywhere. Reptile keepers who have reticulated pythons have described them as highly intelligent and persistent for a snake species. No wonder it was able to find a point of entry and forced its way into the young eagle's cage.

Very sad news especially for a critically endangered animal that's a Philippine icon. But, no one is to blame here and we should only see this as an accident.

Aldabra giant tortoises have long been dream pets of ours. They're a bit pricey, though, but we're still hoping!

Aldabra giant tortoise have a very regular daily routine, waking up early in the morning to start grazing. During the middle of the day, they rest in the shade, before returning to the grazing grounds as the sun sets.

Oh, how we wish annual pet expos would be a thing again here in Cebu.

The last major expo we attended was way back in April 2015 at Parkmall, Mandaue. We were active members of Cebu Gecko Society (CGS) back then and had our own leopard geckos out on display in our little club's booth during the expo.

Sad to say CGS is no longer active these days.
