HATCHING INSTRUCTIONS:
• HATCHING CONTAINER
- A clear, cone-shaped container is ideal for easy harvesting, but a simple jar, bottle or DIY hatchery will also work (total volume should be more than 1 Liter)
• WATER
- Dechlorinated or aged tap water is best (1 Liter)
• AIR PUMP & TUBING
- An air pump with airline tubing is necessary for aeration
- Use moderate aeration (not too low and not too high)
• PH LEVEL OF WATER
- a pH level of 8.0 to 8.5 is ideal for hatching
• SALINITY
- 15 to 20 ppt (parts per thousand) or 1.015 to 1.020 is the best hatching salinity for artemia cysts.
- Use 15 to 20 grams of non-iodized salt or aquarium rock salt, or use the big scoop provided with the kit (3 to 4 flat scoop)
• EGG DENSITY
- Ideal ratio is 2-3 grams of artemia cysts per liter of water
- Use the small scoop provided (2 to 3 scoops)
• TEMPERATURE
- Ideal temperature is 25-28 degrees Celcius
• HATCHING TIME
- Let the eggs incubate for 24 to 30 hrs. You should see the water turn to an orange-brown color as the eggs hatch. If there are still some eggs unhatched, you may continue up to 36 hrs.
• HARVESTING
- Turn off aeration and wait for about 5-10 mins until the contents separate. The hatched baby brine shrimp (nauplii) will gather at the bottom. The shells will float while unhatched eggs will sink.
- Carefully siphon or collect the hatched shrimp using a fine-mesh net.
• LIGHT SOURCE
- A light source (like a lamp) helps attract the hatched shrimp for harvesting.
IMPORTANT TIPS:
• STORAGE
- Our artemia cysts are sealed in a vacuum pouch to prevent exposure to air/humidity.
- Humidity is one of the main factors that will deteriorate the hatching viability of the eggs as it could turn into moisture when exposed to lower temperature (condensation process). We want the eggs to be always dry.
- Once the vacuum pouch is opened, transfer the eggs to the air tight bottle provided in the kit (use the paper funnel, also provided, for ease of transfer) and keep tightly closed after each use.
- Normal room temperature and high temperature are also the enemy of the artemia cysts.
- Store any unused brine shrimp eggs in the refrigerator or freezer to maintain their viability. Remember, keep the container/bottle tightly sealed. You may also re-use the pouch for extra protection.
• CLEANLINESS
- Regularly clean and disinfect all your hatching equipment between batches to prevent contamination and ensure a high hatch rate.
• THAWING
- If eggs were stored in freezer for some time, let it thaw or simply expose to normal room temperature for 12 to 24 hrs prior hatching
