Working with a 6 month old German Shepherd on structured play and engagement.
The objective is to teach the dog that play has rules, structure, and purpose. Throughout the session, I intermittently introduce obedience commands and use access to play as a functional reward.
Rather than simply handing the dog a toy after a correct response, I actively participate in the reward by engaging in play with the dog. This creates reinforcement through interaction, not just through possession of the toy.
Over time, this helps increase the value of the handler, strengthen engagement, and develop motivation and focus in the presence of distractions.
The goal is not simply to create a dog that is motivated by a toy. The goal is to develop a dog that is motivated to work with the handler because the handler becomes an important part of the reinforcement process.
Structured play is not just about having fun. When used correctly, it becomes a powerful tool for building engagement, motivation, communication, and handler value.
