MUMMIFIED PIGLETS

CAUSES PARVOVIRUS OR PRRS?
By measuring the size of the mummified piglets we can determined what stage of pregnancy the diseases occurred and the possible cause..
Approximately age of mummified fetus can be determined by measuring the crown to rump length

20 mm. = 25 days
27 mm. = 30 days
46 mm. = 40 days
89 mm. = 50 days
135 mm. = 60 days
170 mm. = 70 days
207 mm. = 85 days
279 mm. = 110 days

PARVOVIRUS can affect the development piglets from 30 days to 70 days of pregnancy. The size of mummified piglets associated w/ PARVOVIRUS ranges from about 2 cm to 17 cm in length.
Still there are viral diseases that can affect piglets beyond 70 days typical of which is PRRS ( PORCINE Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome ) VIRUS resulting on large (20 cm) even sized mummified piglets.

* White pasty diarrhea
Cause: milk scours (undigested milk)
Treatment: neomycin

* Yellowish white w/o gas bubbles
Cause: colibacillosis (e-coli)
Treatment: neomycin

* Bright yellow tinged w/blood
Cause: salmonellosis (salmonella)
Treatment: cotrimoxazole
* Yellow gray watery w/blood mucus
Cause: swine dysentery (treponema)
Treatment: tylosin

* Yellow gray profuse watery diarrhea
Cause: coccidiosis (isospora)
Treatment: sulfas; amprolium

* Brownish
Cause: ascariasis (round worms)
Treatment: dewormer

Reddish brownish with grey shred of tissue debris
Cause: clostridial diarrhea (clostridium)
Treatment: penicillin
