🐾 Leptospirosis in Pets: What Every Pet Owner Should Know 🦠
What is Leptospirosis?
Leptospirosis is a serious bacterial infection that affects dogs and other animals—and it can even spread to humans. It’s caused by a bacteria called Leptospira, found in water or soil contaminated by the urine of infected animals (like rats, raccoons, or livestock.
🐶 How Do Pets Get It?
Your dog can become infected by:
• Drinking or swimming in contaminated water (puddles, ponds, lakes)
• Contact with infected urine or soil
• Bites from infected animals
• Contact through cuts or mucous membranes (like eyes or mouth)
⚠️ Signs of Leptospirosis in Dogs
Look out for:
• Fever, lethargy
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Loss of appetite
• Increased thirst or urination
• Jaundice (yellow gums/skin)
• Muscle pain or stiffness
• In severe cases: kidney or liver failure
Some dogs show no symptoms but can still spread the bacteria!
💉 Protecting Your Pet
✅ Vaccinate annually—especially if your dog goes outside frequently
✅ Avoid stagnant water and areas where wildlife may urinate
✅ Clean up pet waste and wash hands afterward
✅ Control rodents in your yard, garage, and home
What About You?
Leptospirosis is zoonotic—meaning people can get it, too. Always wear gloves when cleaning up after sick pets and see your vet immediately if your dog shows any signs of illness.
🐕🦺 When to Call Your Vet?
If your dog has been exposed to floodwater, shows any symptoms, or is overdue for vaccines, schedule a visit right away. Early treatment can save lives!
📢 Quick Tip: Dogs don’t need to be in the wild to catch leptospirosis. Urban pets are at risk too, especially in areas with rodent activity.
