A new species of cat has been discovered for the first time in more than 100 years. 🐱😱🌿

The Tilcayo tiger cat, scientifically known as Leopardus tilcayo, was identified in Bolivia’s Yungas cloud forests, making it the first newly described living cat species since 1923.

And the discovery came in an unexpectedly adorable way: a man found the tiny animal and thought it was simply a strange-looking housecat. Instead, he had encountered a wild feline that scientists had never formally identified. 😨

The Tilcayo is surprisingly small, weighing only around 3 pounds, with rounded ears, a long tail and a coat covered in distinctive spots. It may look like a miniature pet, but it belongs to the tiger cat group and lives in the wild.

Researchers used genetic analysis and other evidence to determine that the animal represents a distinct evolutionary lineage that separated from other tiger cats roughly 1.4 million years ago. 🧬

Scientists are now trying to learn more about this elusive feline, including how many Tilcayo cats remain in the wild and how much of Bolivia’s cloud forest they inhabit.
