That is the distance between Tatay and the rest of us.

Tonight my brother went to check on him and found this. Tatay and Mocha, already laid out on the mat in the garage, waiting for him to arrive.

Tatay lives on his own now with 3 of our resident dogs. He is a senior, and he carries a few illnesses of his own. Our only way of reaching him these days is through a keypad phone, so most of what we know about how he is really doing comes from these visits.

Tonight it was this. Tatay resting, worn out from the day. Mocha curled into him like he had been there a while, not moving until Tatay opened his eyes again.

He was not alone out there. He has some of the dogs. But we know this is not how it is supposed to be.

This is exactly why we just launched the SoL Debt-Free Drive. Because part of why we are still scattered like this, why Tatay is minutes away instead of beside us, is the weight of what we owe.

We are praying this is the year we clear our vet bills, and the year we finally find a place to start the SoL sanctuary, safe and secure, wide enough for all of us. Tatay, our residents, everyone, finally home together.

No more keypad phones as our only thread to him. No more waiting on a garage floor for someone to come home.
