🐾💙 REMEMBERING K-9 KYLO — A FINAL SHIFT THAT BECAME A FAREWELL
The CDO Paw Pack joins dog lovers and communities in remembering K-9 Kylo, a German Shepherd with the Portland Police Bureau in Oregon, USA, whose life ended while serving on what was scheduled to be his final shift before retirement.
On September 24, 2026, law-enforcement officers were attempting to apprehend a wanted man in Southeast Portland. At about 1:45 p.m., members of a multi-agency task force encountered the man near SE 97th Avenue and SE Oak Street, close to the Chestnut Tree Inn. Gunfire broke out during the encounter.
Kylo was injured during the shooting. Officers immediately transported him for emergency veterinary treatment, and efforts were made at animal hospitals to save his life. Sadly, Kylo died from injuries sustained in the shooting. The wanted man also died at the scene, and police reported recovering a fi***rm.
What makes Kylo's story especially heartbreaking is that September 24 was supposed to be his last day of duty. After six years serving the Portland community, he was scheduled to retire that very day. Instead of beginning his retirement, his final shift became his last.
Kylo joined the Portland Police Bureau in 2020. Earlier accounts from the bureau described him as a German Shepherd who had been born and trained in Germany before coming to the United States. He was also remembered for his playful personality and for howling along with police sirens.
His loss was deeply felt within the Portland Police Bureau. Police spokesperson Mike Benner described Kylo as a beloved member of the bureau and emphasized the bond between K-9s, their handlers and the officers they work alongside. Police Chief Bob Day also spoke about Kylo's importance to the department and community.
Following his death, Portland police officers held a procession to honor Kylo, escorting him from the veterinary hospital to the Oregon Humane Society. Officers and members of the community gathered to pay their respects.
The shooting remains under investigation. Portland Police said its Homicide Unit is investigating, while the bureau will conduct an internal review of the officer-involved shooting, including the response, tactics and actions taken during the incident.

A final shift spent doing the work you were trained to do.
For the people who knew and worked with him, Kylo was more than a working dog. He was a partner, a companion and a member of the police family.
