Sa Karagatang Masigla, Kaya Natin 🌊🌍
As we commence the celebration of the Month of the Ocean, may this serve as a reminder that our actions directly shape the health of our seas and the resilience of our coastal communities.
Let us continue to raise awareness, take part in on-the-ground efforts, and protect our coastal and marine ecosystemsβ€”to help build a stronger, more resilient nation anchored on a thriving ocean.
Hand-in-hand, we can create a difference!🀝

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Caraga Region, in partnership with the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA), is conducting a five-day capacity-building workshop of DENR-13 technical personnel on land classification, map replotting, and ground validation processes from April 27 to May 1, 2026, at Almont Inland Resort in Butuan City.

The workshop brings together DENR Caraga Officials, Geodetic Engineers, GIS specialists, and other technical personnel, with NAMRIA experts serving as resource speakers. The activity underscores a shared commitment to strengthening technical capability and improving the accuracy of land classification data in the region.

On behalf of DENR Caraga OIC-Regional Executive Director Maritess M. Ocampo, OIC-ARD for Technical Services Atty. Redemtor A. Oja welcomed the participants during the opening program.

As the country’s official custodian of LC maps, NAMRIA plays a critical role in land management and policy development. However, many existing mapsβ€”some dating back to the pre- and post-World War II eraβ€”contain geographic inaccuracies due to the limitations of earlier survey technologies. These discrepancies can lead to misinterpretations of land classification status, particularly at the level of Community and Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Offices.

In 2021, Former DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu issued a directive mandating the NAMRIA to review, geo-reference, and replot land classification maps using modern topographic baselines.

In response, NAMRIA is advancing a draft policy that standardizes the replotting and updating process. The effort also aligns with the 1987 Constitution, which categorizes lands into agricultural, forest or timber, mineral, and national parkβ€”reinforcing the importance of accurate, reliable mapping in sustainable resource governance.

A total of 36 Small Water Impounding Systems (SWIS) were established across the Caraga Region from 2022 to 2025β€”transforming water access in far-flung communities, easing scarcity, and bringing a reliable lifeline closer to the people who need it most.
