"Bird" is the word!!๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿชถ

Welcome to The Feathers of Negros, the fifth section of Negros Forest Park.

Here, you'll meet many of our feathered friends that can be found in Negros and other parts of the Philippines including our two members of the West Visayan Big 5 - The colorful and loud Visayan Tarictic Hornbill and elegant yet shy Negros Bleeding Heart Dove.

Currently, the Philippines is home to over 700 species of birds, according to the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines (2025), the Philippines has 761 species of birds at the end of 2024, 274 of which are endemics or can't be found naturally anywhere else in the world.

Here at Negros Forest Park, we make sure that our eye-catching and stunning feathered friends will continue to amaze us in many futures to come.

Welcome to our fourth section of Negros Forest Park - The Dragon Alley

Home to our infamous dragons of the Philippines and although they lack to ability to breathe fire but they can be as astonishing as they are in the natural world.

Philippines is Home to over 11 endemic species of monitor lizards (Varanidae) or what we called locally as the "halo" or "bayawak" and they can inhabit in various habitats from rainforests to coastal mangrove forest and even around man-made canals and reserviors.
Here in Dragon Alley, we represent two species of water monitor lizards - the Large Scaled Water Monitor from West Visayas including Negros and is characterise by its large nuchal scales on its neck and the Yellow Headed Water Monitor from the Southern Philippines and is recognized by its high yellow coloration which makes the most beautiful species of monitor in the Philippines.

They're opportunitic predators and play a critical role in maintaining the population of small animals and would even scavenge on carrion to keep the environment disease free.

Sharing with the monitors is another yet iconic dragon of the Philippines - the Philippine Sailfin Lizard.

This species belongs to the Agamid family (Agamidae) and is recognized by the renounces large sail like fin running on the based of its tail which it uses to thermoregulate and to store fats and as a mating display.

Unlike the monitors, Sailfins are omnivorous and would happily feed on both animal and plant matter.

Sadly, these iconic dragons are often being captured from the wild to be sold in the illegal pet trade or being eaten as a local bush meat which consequently cause their numbers to decline in their natural habitat.

Here in the Negros Forest Park, we help these amazing dragons through captive breeding as well as educating our visitors about the importance of these dragons in our local ecosystem and debunking myths surrounding them.

Welcome to our third section of Negros Forest Park - The Spotted Deer Trail

Home to one of our iconic members of the West Visayan Big 5 - The Visayan Spotted Deer

This species of Deer is endemic only to the West Visayan islands where it inhabits dense rainforests, open woodlands, and tall grasslands and the only philippine deer species that retains its spots from young to adult.

This species exhibits sexual dimorphism where the males or stag carry a pair of impressive antlers on top of their head which they use for fighting during the breeding seasons while as the females or doe lack none and are usually accompanied by their fawn or are in a small female group.

Sadly, this species is facing threats from habitat loss, and poaching for its skin and meat. Which results them being locally extinct in other parts of West Visayas except Negros and Panay.

Here in the Negros Forest Park, we have the incredible privilege in breeding these amazing deers back from extinction and releasing them back into the wild to continue their role in the ecosystem as browsers and seed dispensers.

Welcome to our second section of Negros Forest Park - The Parrot Passage

Home to our two iconic philippine parrots; the Philippine Hanging Parrot or the Kulasisi which is one of the smallest parrot species in the Philippines and the elegant Blue - naped Parrot or known locally as the Pikoy, gets its name from the bright blue coloration on the back of its neck.

Philippines is Home to over 11 endemic species of parrots and are inhabit primarily and secondary rainforests as well as coastal mangrove forest in every region.

Parrots play a critical role as seed dispensers of certain fruit trees and develop niche partitioning with other animals which enables them to coexist in the same habitat.

Sharing with the Philippine parrots in the Passage is yet another fabulous bird who's had an incredible ability to talk
- The Palawan Hill Mynah.

Endemic only to the island of Palawan, this bird is recognized by its jet black plumage and yellow wattles around its face but what its known for is its ability to mimic sounds of other birds and even people.

Sadly, their bright colored feathers and extraordinary gifts had made both parrots and mynahs being captured from the wild to be sold in the illegal pet trade which consequently cause a mass decline of these birds in their natural habitat. Upsetting the natural balance.

Here in the Negros Forest Park, we help these birds through captive breeding and reintroduce them back to the wild as well as educating our curious visitors about the roles of parrots and mynahs in our local ecosystem.
