What can your pet’s gums tell you about their health? More than you might think.

These extremely pale gums can be a warning sign of severe anemia. In this case, the anemia was associated with a blood parasite infection.

Blood parasites can damage or destroy red blood cells, reducing the blood’s ability to carry oxygen throughout the body. Aside from pale gums, watch for weakness, lethargy, loss of appetite, rapid breathing, or unusual tiredness.

Don’t wait for symptoms to become severe. If your pet’s gums suddenly look pale or whitish, bring them to your veterinarian for proper testing and diagnosis.
