As we welcome the New Year, we can expect lots of loud, sparkly, and colorful fireworks ๐ While these bring excitement to us hoomans, they can be very scary for our furry (and not-so-furry) friends. Cats and dogs arenโt the only ones affectedโmany animals feel anxious and overwhelmed during this time. Even with efforts to lessen firework use, not everyone shares the same sentiments.
Here are some simple ways we can help keep our furkids safe, calm, and comfy:
1. Create a cozy safe space ๐๏ธ
Prepare a quiet room where your furkid can hide and relax. Close windows and doors, block gaps with towels to muffle the noise, and play soft, calming music for extra comfort.
2. Dress them in calming gear ๐
Anxiety wraps, calming vests, or even pet earmuffs can help them feel more secure. There are also easy DIY anxiety wrap tutorials online!
3. ID is a must! ๐ท๏ธ
Fireworks can cause panic, making pets run or hide. Every year, many furkids go missing during New Year celebrations. Make sure theyโre wearing collars with names and contact numbers. GPS tags are a big plus!
4. Have oxygen on standby ๐ซง
Portable oxygen cans (around โฑ250) are available and can be used as a precaution for pets who hyperventilate when stressed.
5. Know your emergency vet ๐ฅ
Keep the contact details of a 24-hour veterinary clinic handyโjust in case. If your furkid has severe noise anxiety, your trusted vet can also prescribe calming meds. Donโt be shy to ask!
