Are Discus fish easy to keep?

While captive-bred domestic strains are much hardier than wild-caught discus from the past, they still demand pristine water quality, warm temperatures (82°F–85°F), frequent large water changes, and multiple daily feedings, making them challenging for beginners.

Why Discus Require Extra Care

Warm Water: They need stable, high temperatures between 82°F and 85°F (28°C–29°C), which limits the types of compatible tank mates and plants
Frequent Maintenance: Because they require heavy feeding to grow and stay healthy, waste builds up quickly. Many keepers perform multiple large water changes (50% or more) each week.
