Cage size is one of the top reasons for weak pasterns in growing pups.

How it affects:

1. Too small cage / crate too long
- Pup can't stretch, stand, walk
- No resistance exercise for tendons/ligaments
- Pasterns don't strengthen - muscles stay soft
- Paws stay flat, splayed, weak
- Same as human baby who never walks

2. Too big cage but still caged 24/7 with smooth floor (tiles):
- Pup slips, splays feet trying to grip
- Puts all weight on pasterns, not toes
- Causes down on pasterns + east-west

Ideal for 2-6 months working pup (Malinois/GSD):

- Crate only for sleeping / at night - size should allow stand, turn, lie. Not too big.
- Daytime: must be in run / pen with rough surface - at least 4ft x 8ft per pup
- Surface: NEVER smooth tiles. Use: rubber mats, grass, sand, rough concrete, gravel
- Exercise: 3-4x daily short walks 10-15 mins on different textures

If your pups are in cage from morning to evening on tiles, that's why you see weak pasterns at 3-4 months.

Fix now:
1. Move pups to outdoor pen with grass or sand daytime
2. Add pebbles / rough mat inside cage
3. Feed less - keep lean (you should see last 2 ribs slightly)
4. Daily walks on uneven ground

Pasterns are 90% management, 10% genetics in pups under 6 months. Still fixable until 5 months if you change housing now.
