Although bird flu has now arrived in New Zealand, the risk to pet cats and dogs remains low. Dogs rarely become infected with bird flu, and those that do rarely become seriously unwell.

But because cats overseas have occasionally become infected with bird flu after exposure to sick or dead birds, raw poultry, or unpasteurised (raw) cow’s milk, it’s helpful to know what to look for and how to keep your pets safe.

As the weather warms up and the flowers start blooming, our furry friends are eager to spend more time outdoors.

Spring is a wonderful season, but it also brings a few extra things to keep in mind:

🌼 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝗮 & 𝗧𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Rising temperatures mean pests are active again. Make sure your pet's treatments are up to date!
🌼 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀: Watch out for excessive itching, paw licking, or watery eyes.
🌼 𝗧𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀: Keep an eye out for spring lilies and bulbs that can be harmful to pets.

🌸 Meet Sakura! 🌸

Sakura is a 2-and-a-bit-year-old Staffy cross and an absolute sweetheart. 💕 She has the most gentle, lovely nature and has been a real pleasure to have in the clinic!

Sakura was referred to ARC after we found changes in both of her knees that were suspicious for cruciate ligament problems. The team at ARC confirmed that both knees required surgery, and she has since had TPLO surgery on both sides. 🐾

The cruciate ligament helps keep the knee stable. When it becomes damaged or ruptures, the knee can become painful and unstable, causing lameness and inflammation. Unfortunately, dogs who rupture one cruciate are also at higher risk of developing a problem in the opposite knee, sometimes months or years later. 🐾

Sakura is now about 4 weeks post-op and progressing really well! Her incisions are healing nicely, she’s using both back legs well and there’s minimal swelling. She’s continuing with strict rest, short toilet walks, pain relief and gentle exercises, alongside physiotherapy to help rebuild her strength and mobility.

For now, it’s all about taking things slowly while those knees heal and Sakura is doing a fantastic job! 🌸🐶

Has your pet been coughing, wheezing, or struggling to catch their breath lately?

If your pet is coughing, wheezing, sneezing excessively, or breathing much faster than usual while at rest, they need a professional assessment. Respiratory changes can indicate anything from a simple respiratory infection to underlying heart conditions or allergies.
