Awesome tips from the amazing Team at Barrowman and Goodman Vets

With winter fast approaching, it’s the perfect time to get your pets ready for the colder days ahead 🧣❄️
Here are a few quick tips to help keep them warm, healthy, and comfortable this season:
🐶 For your Dogs:
Dry Those Paws — Wipe after walks to prevent cracks and irritation.
Watch the Weight — Less exercise + same food = winter weight gain!
Boost Joint Support — Consider supplements if your dog slows down in the cold.
Watch for Coughs — Winter bugs spread easily; persistent coughing needs a vet check.

🐱 For your Cats:
Senior Support — Cold weather can flare arthritis in older cats.
Check outdoor cats at night — Bring them in during frosty evenings to prevent hypothermia.
Maintain regular grooming — Thick winter coats can mat easily without brushing.
Check the Car — Tap the bonnet; cats seek warmth under engines.

We know PEMF can sound a bit sci-fi when you first hear about it 😅 and honestly, from the outside it can just look like a dog lying on a mat with a remote beside them.

But there’s actually a lot going on behind the scenes!

PEMF stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy, and it works by sending very gentle electromagnetic pulses into the body’s tissues and cells to help support circulation, cellular activity, healing and recovery.

It’s completely non-invasive, very gentle, and most dogs find it incredibly relaxing. We’ll often use it alongside other rehab treatments during a consult depending on what the dog needs.

PEMF is actually used a lot in human physio and recovery too, especially for pain, healing and rehabilitation, but it’s still something many people haven’t come across yet in the dog world here in NZ.

It’s become one of our favourite tools in clinic for dogs recovering from surgery or injury, older dogs needing support with mobility and stiffness, or just dogs needing a bit of extra help feeling comfortable in their bodies again 🐾💙

If you’ve got any questions about PEMF, feel free to ask us at your next appointment!

We’ve had quite a few new people here lately, so we thought we’d reintroduce ourselves.

We’re Paws 4 Rehab, a canine physiotherapy clinic based in Whakatāne, working with dogs to help them move better, recover well, and stay as strong and comfortable as possible 🐕

Jo is a qualified physiotherapist (for both humans and dogs), and along with the team, we take a really individual approach depending on what each dog needs.

We work with everything from post-surgery rehab, to arthritis support, to younger dogs needing help with strength and movement.

We also offer hydrotherapy, massage, laser, PEMF and more, depending on what’s most appropriate for the dog in front of us.

If you’re new here, welcome 🐾💙
We hope to see you and your furry friends soon!
