The New Zealand Shoveler, also called spoonies because of their spoon shaped bill. In the maimai we normally hear the jet aircraft type sound as a small flock of them descend rapidly from high altitude. It is their small size and fast speed that makes them a challenging and exciting target for the sportsman.

Big thanks to Vern and Louise from Sika Country Taxidermy, Taupo, for mounting this pretty guy for me. The advantage of taking a pre rut stag is it still has it's summer coat, no cape damage and prime venison, the down side is it does not have the swollen neck of a rutting stag.
