Why Cat Grass Is More Than Just a Cute Extra

Cat grass isn’t just a pretty patch of green. It actually plays a real role in your cat’s wellbeing.

Here’s a simple breakdown of why so many indoor cats benefit from having their own TummyTurf.

Digestive & hairball support: Cat grass provides natural roughage that helps move swallowed fur through the digestive tract. It can also help bind hair so your cat can safely expel it when needed.

Essential nutrients: Fresh greens contain chlorophyll and folic acid (vitamin B9), which support healthy blood oxygenation and overall vitality.

A safe chewing outlet: For cats who love to nibble, cat grass offers a non‑toxic alternative that keeps them away from unsafe houseplants.

Mental enrichment: Grazing taps into your cat’s natural foraging instincts, helping reduce boredom and ease indoor stress.

It’s a small addition to their environment but it supports digestion, satisfies instincts, and gives them a safe, enriching daily ritual.

LECA Trial Update: How It’s Going So Far

A little while ago we shared that we were trialling LECA (lightweight expanded clay balls) in one of our TummyTurf trays just to see if it could make things even cleaner, simpler, and more reusable for cat parents.

So… how’s it going? Here’s what we’ve noticed so far:
Cleaner base layer: The LECA has stayed tidy and easy to rinse, which keeps the whole setup feeling fresh.
Great root anchoring:the roots have wrapped around the clay balls nicely, especially helpful for the enthusiastic pullers.
Still fully hydroponic: no soil, no mess, just water and growth.
Reusable: A quick clean and it’s ready for another round.

We’re still watching how it performs over multiple grows, but so far it’s looking promising as a clean, simple alternative for people who like a reusable setup.

No changes to the kits , just us experimenting behind the scenes, as always.

Why PurrCrazy Catnip Is Greenhouse‑Grown

Our ZoomieFuel catnip is grown in a cosy greenhouse, and there’s a good reason for that. It keeps the plants happy, healthy, and naturally full of that delicious catnip scent cats go wild for.

Greenhouse growing means:
•Consistent warmth as catnip loves a snug environment, and happy plants make stronger‑smelling leaves.
•Protected from pests which means no sprays, no pesticides, no chemicals. Just clean, natural growth.
•Better scent as stable conditions helps the leaves develop those rich oils cats react to.
•Year‑round growing so your cat gets fresh, fragrant catnip no matter the season.

And once it’s ready, we package ZoomieFuel in small batches so it stays fresh, fragrant, and full of zoomie potential the moment you open the bag.

The result?
Catnip that smells incredible and cats who immediately know something exciting is happening.

You can head to our website to shop and treat your floof to some ZoomieFuel goodness.

Why PurrCrazy Cat Grass Kits Don’t Use Soil

Most people assume cat grass needs soil but the seeds already come packed with everything they need to sprout. All they really want is water, light, and a cat who isn’t planning to turn the grass into a personal excavation site.

Here’s why at PurrCrazy we skip the soil:

There is no mess: No potting mix on the carpet, no muddy paws, no mysterious dirt trails leading to your cat.

No “new litter box" moments: Some cats see soil and immediately get ideas. Hydroponic growing removes that temptation entirely.

Cleaner, fresher growth: Without soil holding moisture, there’s less chance of mould sneaking in.

Its Super simple: No drainage drama, no guessing games. Just add water and let the grass do its thing.

The result?
Fresh, lush cat grass your cat can nibble on without the dirt, the smell, or the chaos.

Is Your Cat a Catnip Cat?

Some cats take one sniff of catnip and instantly turn into tiny mischief machines. Here are some telltale signs.

The sniff‑and‑zoom:
One whiff and they’re rolling, rubbing, or doing excited little laps.

The dramatic flop:
A full‑body melt into the floor like they’ve forgotten how paws work.

The playful pounce:
Toys suddenly become 10× more interesting. Even imaginary ones.

The blissed‑out chill:
That dreamy “don’t disturb me vibing” face.

If your cat does none of these, totally normal as it's said around 30% don’t respond to catnip at all. Their body just doesn’t recognise the natural chemical, so it smells like....well, like a plant.

Every cat is wired differently, and that’s what makes them so entertaining.

We are trialling something new behind the scenes!

Earlier this month we shared that we use a hydroponic mat in our TummyTurf kits, and that hasn’t changed. The mats are working really well for most cats.

Here at PurrCrazy we’re always testing new ideas to see if we can keep things simple, clean, and fully hydroponic, just like our kits already are.

This week we’ve started trialling LECA (lightweight expanded clay balls) in one of our trays.

We’re testing it to see whether it can help keep the setup:
• simple
• remain hydroponic
• cleaner
• easy to maintain
• and as an added bonus keeping things reusable

We’re also curious to see whether LECA gives the roots better anchoring (especially for the enthusiastic pullers) and whether it makes the whole grow even tidier.

This is just a small trial, so no changes to the kits, just us experimenting to see if it’s worth exploring further. We’ll share updates as it grows.

Why Cats Benefit From Daily Grazing (Especially Indoor Cats)

Cats have the instinct to nibble on plants, even if they’ve never been outside. Cat grass gives them a safe, healthy way to do it.

Cats naturally graze in the wild for roughage and digestive support, and that instinct doesn’t disappear just because they may live indoors.

A little daily grass can help hair move through the digestive system and reduce the chance of hairballs forming.

If you provide them something safe to chew also means they’re less likely to go after your houseplants, especially the ones that aren’t cat‑friendly.

Chewing, sniffing and exploring textures counts as enrichment. For indoor cats, these small daily rituals help reduce boredom and support emotional wellbeing.

For many cats, grazing isn’t just a treat. It’s part of their everyday health and happiness.

Some cats go wild for catnip, and others take a sniff and walk away completely unfazed. The reason is quite simple, their body just doesn’t recognise the plants natural chemical called nepetalactone.

When a cat smells catnip, this triggers special receptors in the nose that send signals to the brain creating play, curiosity, and excitement. A true classic “catnip response.”

But not all cats respond to nepetalactone. If those receptors don’t activate, the brain doesn’t get the signal so nothing happens. Catnip just smells like an ordinary plant, and they move on with their day.

It’s completely normal, and it doesn’t mean anything is wrong. It simply means they are just wired a little differently.

Every cat has their own preferences, and that’s part of what makes them so entertaining to live with.

Cat grass is one of those simple little joys for indoor cats. Some nibble politely like little lawn mowers, and some go full demolition mode.

One of ours is the gentle grazer, and the other grabs a whole mouthful, tugs like he’s uprooting a shrub, and lifts half the roots up with him.

It’s also why I’ve been testing a new hydroponic mat for the TummyTurf kits. It keeps the roots anchored and the grass growing upright, even for the over‑enthusiastic muncher. Some can’t even wait for the grass to be fully grown.

Cat grass gives cats a natural outlet, supports digestion, and adds a bit of enrichment to their day.
