𝗛𝗜𝗚𝗛 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 - 𝗡𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘆

A ninth place finish for Jonelle Price and Chilli’s Midnight Star was New Zealand’s best effort in the CCI5*-L at the Burghley Horse Trials.
The Kiwi combo were 21st after their 36.2 penalty point dressage, shot up 10 spots to 10th after adding 10.8 time on a challenging cross country, and finished with .8 time in the showjumping for a final tally of 47.8.
Tim Price and Global Quest were 11th on 48.9 with Jesse Campbell and Cooley Lafitte 13th on 51.9.
Brit Gemma Stevens and Chilli Knight put a nightmare showing at the World Championships last month to take the win by 13.4 penalty points – the biggest winning margin since 1998. She finished on 29.6 penalty points and was the only rider to complete on her dressage score. Second was Katie Magee 🇬🇧 and Treworra were second on 43 with Caroline Pamukcu 🇺🇸 aboard HSH Blake third on 44.
Just 27 of the original 48 starters completed the event.

Cross country delivered in the CCI5*-L at Burghley Horse Trials overnight.
There’s been plenty of movement on the leaderboard, including from Kiwi riders. Tim Price and Global Quest moved from sixth to second, with Jonelle Price and Chilli’s Midnight Star up 10 places to 11th and Jesse Campbell with Cooley Lafitte up 13 places to 15th.
It was a tumultuous day with just two combinations coming home clear and inside time, nine retirements – including Tim and Falco, Caroline Powell with High Time and Clarke Johnstone on Domasco. There were also nine eliminations.
“It was a tough track, with lots of problems everywhere for lots of good horses,” said Tim. He was very happy to steer Global Quest safely home in its first Burghley, adding 4.8 time to finish on 36.9 penalty points
“You never know until you know around a Burghley. We have done a couple of 5*s but nothing compares to a track like this. He proved he was up to the task. He was a bit to manage at times with his big jump on the landing side but he kept galloping and pushing and did everything beautifully.”
Jonelle and Chilli Midnight Star added 10.8 time for a 47 penalty point tally and moved to 11th place. “He is a physically strong horse for me but he is a good jumper,” says Jonelle. “He is a blood horse and made for this job. He is mentally very tough. I think you need a good element of that here at Burghley.”
Jesse Campbell was delighted with his horse. “I had to adapt to what I was feeling underneath me and go with that but he tried so hard and stayed with me the whole way.”
They added 13.2 time for an end-of-day score of 51.5.
Tim said Falco had been “textbook until he wasn’t” on the cross country. “He is cheeky and needs to be spot on for everything.” They had an unfortunate stop at fence 19B. “It was enough to put us out of the competition so I walked home. He is getting towards the end of his career but there are still hopefully a few things to achieve with him.”
Gemma Stevens 🇬🇧 and Chilli Knight lead the field on 29.6 with Holly Richardson 🇬🇧 and Ballneety Silver Service charging up from 28th to third on 38.3. Next is the second horse inspection followed by the showjumping.

Caroline Powell has had a cracker Burghley already, winning the 2026 Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse Final for five-year-olds aboard Cath Tomson’s Irish sport horse ESL Cula Bula and placing in the four-year-old too.
“We’ve had her from birth and she’s gorgeous,” says Caroline of Cula Bula. “When I had a knee operation, she was the one I rode first as she is so well balanced. She’s a horse I’m excited about and will be back here in four years’ time (for the CCI5*).”
The young event horse competition is designed to highlight the CCI5* horses of the future.
The bay mare, by KMS Rooney Van de Veldbaile out of Ebony AS, was bred by Caroline’s partner Greg Kinsella’s mother, Gwen.
WLS Cula Bula was 10th in the dressage, second in the jumping, fourth in suitability and type, and fifth in the gallop.
Caroline's Rockefeller Scais was fourth in the 47-strong class, with Emma Carmichael in the saddle for the gallop.
She also placed third in the 38-strong four-year-old final with WLS Kingston. The class was won by Ros Canter (GBR) aboard Kilcorig Gotcha Talkin.

That’s a wrap on the CCI5*-L dressage at the Defender Burghley Horse Trials and whew, is it tight at the top with just 10 penalties across the top 35! World No.1 Tim Price and Falco sit in third spot on 30.5 penalty points. Nadja Minder 🇨🇭 and Toblerone have held their lead on 29.5, with Gemma Stevens 🇬🇧 on Chilli Knight right behind her on 29.6.
“Falco was good. There were a couple of frustrating mistakes,” said Tim, “but I was very happy because he was out a couple of weeks ago in Germany and he was basically unrideable. He was so fresh and on his ear in the dressage and I pledged to not make that mistake again.”
He described the 17-year-old as a lovely horse. “He has a good time and I enjoy riding him. I do believe in him a lot. It has been a funny old journey but he is a super intelligent, overgrown pony type mentality horse and he has impressed me at Maryland 5* where there was some terrain and at Badminton this year he loved the job. I am hoping we will have a similar experience here but it is uncharted territory.”

Next up is the Derek di Grazia-designed cross country and with a little overnight rain it’s all lining up for a thrilling day of competition. Tayla Mason has withdrawn Centennial, saying she felt the horse wasn't 100% and opted to "save him for another day".

Tim Price and Global Quest are the best of the Kiwis at the end of the opening day of CCI5*-L dressage at the Defender Burghley Horse Trials in the UK. They were early to go and scored 32.1 penalty points for fourth place. “I was very happy with him,” said the world no.1. “I really enjoyed that test. He was relaxed and working at the level that he can work. He tried really hard. Tomorrow afternoon, if he did the same test, he would probably just creep into the twenties with that but early on they stay a little bit colder . . . but I am the rider, not the judge!”
Caroline Powell and High Time sit on 33.9, with Clarke Johnstone and Domasco on 34.5, Tayla Mason aboard Centennial in on 36.2, and Jesse Campbell with Cooley Lafitte on 38.3.

Jonelle Price was judged the best dressed lady, taking to the runway in a striking cream swing coat by ME+EM with Clarke Johnstone the best dressed man in a Dior cashmere jacket and navy trousers. All seven New Zealand combinations are through and join the 48-strong field in the CCI5* dressage tonight and running over the next two days. Go the Kiwis 🥝 🌿 🖤 🇳🇿
