Next week is Te Wiki o te Reo Māori and what better way to celebrate than to teach your dog some commands in Te Reo Maori! There are multiple benefits of using a second language to train your dogs, including giving you a greater range of words you can use in your training and also using commands that not everyone uses means your commands stand out to your dog, around other dogs.
Earlier this year Katie’s Kurī, a kids’ series about 11-year-old Katie and her mischievous new puppy, Rascal was released on YouTube. The first episode introduces Katie and Rascal. Then in the following episodes Katie signs them up for puppy school, only to discover that all the dog commands are taught in te reo Māori. Across six bite-sized, 8-minute episodes, Katie and Rascal learn their noho, e tū, haere mai and more, with varying degrees of success on Rascal’s part!

The series was made to help make te reo Māori feel fun and approachable, and hopefully give whānau the confidence to try it. The series is great for children and adults alike, especially if you are thinking of training your dog using Te Reo Maori.
