Leveisha

Leveisha Daycare and grooming services for all dogs big and small! We are also breeders of Border Collies and German Spitz (Mittel) - located in Wellington, New Zealand.

Leveisha Kennels is a small, family run kennels promoting the Border Collie and German Spitz Mittel breeds. We take great pride in producing great family pets, with a great temperament, intelligence as well as good looks. Our dogs are a big part of our families, they are well loved and have access to run amuck on 10 acres of land or curl up inside, on the couch. Our dogs have grown up being campai

gned in the breed ring and they always give their best. Many of our dogs are imported from overseas to ensure we have depth in our breeding lines, we also DNA test ALL our show dogs as well as hip/elbow score our Border Collies. All of our puppies are sold with a pet contract, DogsNZ papers with endorsements as well as a puppy information pack to get you started the right way with your puppy. We also provide ongoing support to all our puppy owners. We have created this page so we can keep in regular contact with all of our puppy owners around NZ and overseas and to share our successes.

Special thank you to Lynda Hewett of the world-renowned Spellcast Kennels in the UK for entrusting me with the opportunity to use this stunning dog.

This will be Barnaby’s first litter in the Southern Hemisphere, and after producing some truly beautiful puppies in the UK, we are incredibly excited to see what this special pairing produces here in New Zealand. 🥰

A huge thank you also to Becky and her wonderful team at TCI Vets Palmerston North for their care and support.

🐾 Puppies are due 16th September! 🐾

We cannot wait to meet these little ones and watch this exciting chapter unfold. ❤️

Preserving the German Spitz (Mittel) in New Zealand

As many of you know, I am a breeder and owner of German Spitz (Mittel) here in New Zealand.

One of my growing concerns is the increasing number of puppies being advertised and identified as German Spitz when they are clearly not purebred German Spitz. In many cases, when the sire and dam are shown, it is clear to me that they are not purebred German Spitz; yet, the puppies are still being marketed as German Spitz, which creates confusion for prospective owners and can be somewhat misleading.

While most people simply want a loving companion and may not be concerned about pedigrees, this misunderstanding can have serious consequences for the future of the breed.

When people believe they own a German Spitz and then breed that dog to another Spitz-type dog, the offspring are often still referred to as German Spitz despite not being purebred. Over time, this blurs the distinction between purebred German Spitz and crossbreeds, making it increasingly difficult to preserve the true breed.

If a German Shepherd is crossed with a Labrador, we would not call it a purebred German Shepherd. The same principle should apply to German Spitz. A crossbreed may be a wonderful pet, but it is not a purebred German Spitz.

My concern is not about criticising crossbreeding or the people who own these dogs. It is about preserving this beautiful breed in New Zealand. With only a small number of breeders producing purebred German Spitz, I worry that we may eventually reach a point where there are very few, if any, true German Spitz left in the country.

For the breed to survive, it is important that we recognise, value, and protect the difference between purebred German Spitz and Spitz-type crossbreeds.
