🐦 Bird Flu Update: What You Need to Know 🦠

With recent attention on bird flu, we're taking sensible precautions to help keep our patients, clients, team and our wonderful wildlife safe. We are monitoring the situation closely and staying up to date with advice from MPI, DOC, and the Veterinary Council of New Zealand.

As a precaution, If your bird needs veterinary attention, or you have found a sick bird please give us a call before bringing them into the clinic so we can discuss the safest way to help.

Thank you for your understanding and support as we work to protect our patients, clients, team and the our wonderful wildlife 💙

MPI is regularly updating their advice and information. You can follow the links in the post from MPI if you would like more information.

Bird flu update - July 21

We have had no further detections of H5 bird flu.

We again thank the public for their strong support by reporting unwell and dead birds they see.

If you see three or more sick or dead wild birds in a group, avoid contact, record what you see, and report it to the exotic pest and disease hotline on 0800 80 99 66 from anywhere in New Zealand, or online at report.mpi.govt.nz.

More information about H5 bird flu is available at mpi.govt.nz/hpai

🐰🌷 Easter Pet Safety Reminder 🌷🐰
Easter is a fun time for families – but it can be a risky one for our pets. Here are a few simple tips to help keep them safe this long weekend:
🍫 Chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats – even small amounts can be dangerous.
🐣 Easter eggs & gift wrap – foil, plastic grass and cellophane can cause serious blockages if eaten.
🌼 Lilies are highly toxic to cats – if you have cats at home, it’s safest to avoid lilies altogether.
🍖 Fatty foods & leftovers can upset tummies and may lead to pancreatitis.
🌸 Easter plants & decorations – many can be harmful if chewed.

If you’re ever unsure or worried about your pet, please get in touch with your vet straight away.
🐾 Wishing you and your pets a happy and safe Easter! 🐾

🎉 Big Congratulations to Lord Percival Piwakawaka of Pipitea (Percy)! 🎉
After 10 long days sporting his very glamorous “cone of shame” following his desexing surgery, Percy has finally been granted his well‑deserved freedom!
His cone was beautifully blinged out, of course — and we’re sure that touch of sparkle made the whole experience a little more bearable (and a lot more fabulous) for our noble lord. ✨🐾
Well done, Percy! Enjoy your newfound freedom! 💙🦴

It's baby bird season and we have had few brought in over the last couple of weeks including this cute little seagull chick.

🐦 Found a baby bird? Here’s what to do!
Not every chick on the ground needs rescuing — sometimes they’re just learning to fly. But knowing the difference is important.

🌱 Step 1: Identify the bird
- Nestling (needs help): No feathers or just fluffy down, eyes may be closed. These cannot survive outside the nest and need to be returned if possible.
- Fledgling (usually fine): Has feathers, hops around, may flutter short distances. Parents are often nearby keeping watch.

🛑 Step 2: Assess the situation
- If the bird is injured or in immediate danger contact the Wellington Bird Rehabilitation Trust (WBRT), SPCA or nearest vet clinic.
- If it looks healthy and is a fledgling, leave it be — interfering can reduce its chances of survival. Ensure it is safe from immediate harm and observe from a distance (60-90 minutes) The parents will continue care for fledglings while they are on the ground. If you have not see the parents visit for an hour while you have been observing contact the WBRT or SPCA.

🏡 Step 3: Safe intervention
- For nestlings, try to gently return them to their nest if you can find it. Parents will continue caring for them.
- If the nest is unreachable, place the chick in a small box lined with paper towels and keep it warm and quiet until you can contact the WBRT or SPCA.

💡 Remember: Most fledglings don’t need rescuing — they’re just taking their first flights under the watchful eye of their parents. Only step in if the bird is a nestling, clearly injured or in danger.
