⚠️ Bird Flu (H5N1) has been detected in the Wellington region

Following the recent detection of avian influenza (bird flu) in a wild bird in the Wellington area, we're asking our community to be extra vigilant.

If you see a sick or dead wild bird:
🐦 Please don't touch it or move it.
📞 Report it to the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) on 0800 80 99 66.
🐕 Keep dogs on a lead and away from sick or dead birds.

If your pet has come into contact with a sick or dead bird, please contact your nearest CareVets clinic for advice before bringing them in.

Our Wellington clinics have also introduced additional precautions for birds visiting the clinic. Please phone us before bringing in any bird, so our team can safely assess the situation and provide guidance.

Biosecurity New Zealand is asking everyone to be alert after H5 bird flu was detected here in a single ocean-going seabird.

The bird was found on Petone Beach in the Wellington region, and testing confirmed H5 bird flu (H5N1 avian influenza).

This is the first detection of H5 bird flu in New Zealand. It hasn't been found in any other birds and there are no detections in poultry.

New Zealand is well prepared to respond and protect poultry production, and to reduce impacts on wildlife and communities.

Be alert and use good habits to limit the impact of bird flu.
• Keep your distance: Stay away from sick or dead wildlife. Keep pets away too.
• Keep clean: Wash your hands and clean your gear after being outdoors.
• Know when to report: If you see three or more sick or dead birds, report them to the exotic pest and disease hotline on 0800 80 99 66.

If you see 3 or more sick or dead wild birds together, don’t touch them. Report them immediately to the Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline on 0800 80 99 66.

If you find a sick wild bird, please don’t handle or move it. Leaving it alone gives it the best chance of recovery and helps reduce the spread of avian influenza.

Please don’t bring sick wild birds to our clinic without calling first. If you need advice, give us a call before transporting any bird.

This advice is based on current guidance from the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and the New Zealand Veterinary Council.

We’ve been keeping a little secret… 🤍

We’re so excited to finally announce the newest addition to the family… it’s a dinosaur! 🦖

The first photo is the “scan”, the second is the proud arrival after our team helped deliver this little guy from somewhere he definitely wasn’t meant to be. 😅

Dad is doing great, baby is a little worse for wear (rest of body found headless at home) and everyone involved is probably hoping this phase passes quickly.

Just your friendly reminder that if your dog has a talent for swallowing the weirdest things, don’t wait to get them checked out. ❤️

👑 King's Birthday weekend opening hours 👑

Saturday 30th May: 9am - 4.30pm
Sunday 31st May: 10am - 4pm
Monday 1st June: Closed

Saturday will be staffed with a veterinarian & Sunday we are open for retail & nurse appointments only. Monday King's Birthday we will be shut.

Good morning!

Our entry driveway is currently blocked by crane works, we have been advised this should clear by 12PM. We are OPEN as usual but unfortunately clients will not have access to our parking until this has cleared. We recommend parking at the public carpark across the road.
