After a play session with a mysterious kitten in the mirror came to a crashing end, Micky's mum brought him in for a check-up. 😻

While we checked his eyes and range of movement, Micky showed us he was as agile as ever, giving our dental X-ray machine a thorough inspection and exploring the treatment area.

Side note: Micky may have the softest fur we've ever felt. We'll be needing his self-care tips. ✨🐾

🍫🐾What’s the strangest thing your pet has ever tried to eat?

We’ve seen everything from pool noodles to bread dough lately 😅 — but with Easter around the corner, the most common culprit we see is chocolate.

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to pets and can affect their heart, nervous system, and gastrointestinal tract. Generally speaking, the darker the chocolate, the higher the risk.

How serious it can be depends on:
🐶 your pet’s size
🍫 the type of chocolate
📏 how much was eaten

If you think your dog may have eaten chocolate, this risk calculator can give a rough guide:
https://bestforpet.co.nz/pet-advice/why-is-chocolate-bad-for-pets/

But the very first step if you suspect chocolate ingestion is simple:
📞 Call your vet (that’s us!).

⏱ Timing matters, and early treatment can make a huge difference.
If it’s outside our opening hours, please contact your nearest emergency vet clinic.

🐣 Easter tip: Chocolate eggs + curious noses = trouble. Keep treats up high and safely out of reach!

📌 Save or share this post so more pet owners know the signs.

🎶 Just Dance 🎶

Not quite ready to dance… but definitely dressed for the stage. 💗

Meet Lady Gaga, who injured her leg and needed a splint to help it heal — she’s already modelling the look like a total star.

Our nurses create bandage art for patients who need splints or bandages long-term. 🎨🐾

We’re thinking sparkles and music notes next for this pup princess… unless you’ve got other ideas?

Drop them — or some love for Miss Gaga — in the comments. 🥰🐾

Good Morning Community,

After a couple of years of significant IT issues, we have decided to upgrade our computer systems, which includes a whole new software programme as of this week.

We apologise in advance for any delays regarding phone calls, consult bookings and replying to emails.

We appreciate your patience with us as we navigate our way around the new software.

We are still offering the same excellent service and care to all our patients and clients as always.

Thank you for your understanding (let’s face it, no one likes change!!!)

As a small companion animal clinic, we don’t specialise in exotics or birds — but we do see our fair share of feathered visitors when kind locals step in to help.

This week alone we treated:
🦉 A stunning (but severely injured) ruru
🕊️ A tar-covered pigeon rescued from the road by a thoughtful bus driver
🐣 Several nestlings and fledglings needing support

When birds are brought to us, we assess and stabilise them before arranging appropriate rehabilitation where possible.

Did you know? In Aotearoa, you need a permit to keep or rehabilitate a native bird. The incredible team at BirdCare Aotearoa specialise in native manu and are often the first port of call. The Department of Conservation and SPCA New Zealand also provide advice and support.

If you find a native bird needing help, contact:
📞 Birdcare Aotearoa – (09) 816 9219
📞 DOC – 0800 362 468
📞 SPCA - 09 256 7300

We also work with local rehabilitators for non-native birds, although capacity can be limited. If you know someone who helps feathered friends in need, feel free to pass their details on to us 🐦💚

It's double long weekend time. Please contact your local emergency vet on the public holidays if you require assistance. Wishing you all a safe and happy time with your pet pals.

🎼🎄On the Twelfth day of Christmas, what did BHB Vets see?
☕ Twelve mugs of coffee,
💚 Eleven kind owners,
☎️ Ten phones-a-ringing,
⚡ Nine zoomie puppies,
🦷 Eight dental cleans,
🦴 Seven limping legs,
🐾 Six itchy pets,
💉 Five puppy vaxxes,
😼 Four cat scratches,
🩻 Three x-ray plates,
🐶🐶 Two anxious pups,
🐱 And a cat who really shouldn’t have climbed that tree! 🎄✨ 🎼

Simply post your pet’s Christmas themed photo into the comments section to go into the draw for today’s prize. The winner for this one will be announced on Monday 29th December as our team have a little rest with their families. We’d so love to do this all year, but all fun things must come to an end! Thanks for playing along with us. Wishing you all a safe and happy Christmas.
