We really do have the best clients!
This lovely girl doesn’t travel well but needs regular dental care to help manage her “beautiful” smile.. so what did her owners do CUSTOM built their own crush!!
What a difference it made, she was lovely and relaxed for her IV and sedated really well in her comfy padded crush and head rest.

Strangles Update
As I’m sure you are all aware, there has been a recent strangles outbreak within the Waikato thoroughbred community.
We want to take a moment to update you on what this means for our clients and horses up here.
The Good News
- There was only ONE new case reported this week, and it has a direct, known link to the existing cases.
- There are currently no cases outside of the already identified properties, and no reported cases within the recreational or sport horse communities.

Vaccine Update:
- The strangles vaccine is currently OUT OF stock nationwide.
- While the vaccine is not 100% effective at preventing infection, it significantly reduces the severity and duration of clinical signs.
- Horses that frequently travel or come into contact with large groups of horses should ideally be vaccinated.

We have a waiting list for a special order of vaccines arriving soon. If you would like your horse to be vaccinated, please let us know ASAP so we can add you to the list.

What You Can Do:
- Biosecurity & Monitoring for now, the key message is vigilance, good biosecurity, and early monitoring.
- Please be extra cautious if your horse has recently travelled, is due to travel, or has had contact with horses from the Waikato or racing/training environments.

Please monitor your horses closely for the following clinical signs:
- Fever
- Lethargy
- appearing dull
- off feed
- Coughing and Nasal discharge
- Swollen glands under the jaw

If you think your horse is showing any of these symptoms, PLEASE DO NOT BRING them to the clinic. Instead, phone us immediately so we can provide the right advice, arrange a property visit if necessary, and safely reduce the risk of spread.

EOTRH – Have You Heard of This Condition Before??
- It has a long name—Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis—but we just call it EOTRH.
- This is a relatively common and excruciatingly painful condition affecting the incisors (front teeth) and canine teeth.

For reasons we are still trying to understand, the horse’s body starts to attack and reabsorb its own teeth. It essentially turns strong, healthy tooth roots into "Swiss cheese."

Older horses (over 15 years old) are most at risk, but it can occasionally occur in younger horses too.

It is not an easy condition for most horse owners to pick up on. In fact, it can remain pretty well hidden even during a thorough oral examination. The best and most definitive way to diagnose EOTRH is with dental radiographs (X-rays).

The only current, proven treatment is the extraction of the affected teeth. Yes, sometimes that means removing all of the incisors! It sounds drastic, but horses actually adapt incredibly well and go on to live and eat perfectly happily without them.

We recently saw this lovely horse who presented with one incisor just holding on by a thread. This triggered us to take screening X-rays, which revealed multiple teeth were secretly affected by this painful condition. We were able to take out another severely affected incisor on the spot, and he will be visiting us again soon to have two more removed.

Try "The Carrot Test" at Home:
Hold a carrot tightly in your hand.Let your horse try to bite it off using their front teeth.
If they experience significant pain, they will stop biting and instead try to pull or take the carrot to the back of their mouth to chew with their cheek teeth.

If you are concerned your horse might be affected, or if they fail the carrot test, please let us know! A thorough oral exam paired with screening radiographs is the absolute best way to catch this hidden pain

We love a good medical mystery, and this weirdly wonderful case kept our team on their toes!
Our patient initially presented for being stiff behind, unusually dull, and lethargic. While his physical clinical exam didn't show much, his blood results told a different story—revealing major signs of a severe internal infection. We started him on antibiotics immediately, and he happily began to perk up.
Fast forward two weeks later: a large lump suddenly developed just in front of his flank. With no obvious external wounds or signs of a puncture, we turned to advanced diagnostics. We performed an ultrasound scan of the lump and took a careful fluid sample, confirming a deep-tissue abscess.
Then using the ultrasound as our roadmap, we precisely guided our incision location and depth to safely drain the infection.

The best news? We are pleased to report he is now back to full health and living his best horse life! 🎉🐴

Exactly what caused the deep abscess remains a mystery, but a huge thank you to his owners for acting quickly. This case goes to show how vital bloodwork and ultrasound are when the problem is hiding beneath the surface!

🐴 Sarcoids!! 🐴
If you’ve been around horses long enough, you’ve likely encountered these frustrating equine tumours. We are seeing a lot of them at the clinic at the moment, and the great news is we have some really awesome treatment options available right here in Waipu!

Did you know there are actually 6 different types of sarcoids?
- Occult (flat, hairless patches)
- Verrucose (warty, scabby appearance)
- Nodular (firm lumps under the skin)
- Fibroblastic (fleshy, aggressive growths)
- Mixed (a combination of types)
- Malignant (rare, invasive tumours)

They may look small and insignificant at first, but there is strong evidence supporting that they are spread from horse to horse by flies.
We know there are lots of DIY home remedies floating around out there. However, if you disturb a sarcoid with the wrong treatment, it can make it "angry"— causing it to become very aggressive and grow rapidly.

To give your horse the absolute best outcome, we offer world-class referral options via the Equine Medical Solutions portal. This allows us to get expert, tailored advice and ongoing guidance enabling us to treat your individual horse's sarcoids safely and effectively. If you've spotted a suspicious lump or patch on your horse, don't risk DIY treatments! Give the clinic a call to get it checked out properly.
