It shouldn't happen to a vet (nurse)! But it nearly always does! In the vet world we seem to have a special gift of ending up with animals with weird conditions, special needs, odd behaviour, it just happens, whether we like it or not. So, Toni's cat Pippi had an altercation with a dog and ended up inhaling a lump of gravel. You can see it is totally lodged in her airway. Due to her age and several other ongoing conditions, Toni elected to wait and see what would happen...well nothing happened and when we xrayed her again a few days later, she had obviously coughed it up. A miracle, but Pippi is definitely working her way well through her 9 lives!

Well Basil did it: Hook, Line and Sinker! Basil's owner was about to go fishing and had just baited up his hooks. "Yum" thought Basil and scoffed the lot, as you can see hook, line and sinker. It was not safe to make Basil vomit it all back up again or to try and let it pass through, so we had to open Basil's stomach up and 'Fish' it all out. Basil is fine and went home the next day, Dad didn't go fishing!

Veterinary Nurse Awareness Week, has just finished and we celebrated our awesome vet nurses with goodie bags and treats. The nurse team will be going horse treking at the weekend and Toni our head nurse created fantastic goodie bags with the help of our suppliers to reward the nurse team for their hard work and dedication. A big shout out to my amazing Team! We had a massive week, which started Monday morning with a cat who had swallowed a Nerf dart, then progressed to a dog with a ruptured chest. We have had broken legs, bladder stones, a ruptured diaphragm, and to top it all on Friday a Labrador who had eaten an entire beach and ruptured her intestines. My nurse team did an incredible job of keeping all these seriously compromised patients alive under anaesthetic, and my vet team embraced the challenges with courage and competency. A whole gang of them even went off to the gym after work...Well done Team, your passion, dedication and skill is impressive.

A**l glands are pesky little glands full of smelly fluid that sit either side of the a**s in dogs and cats. Anyone who has owned a pet with a**l gland problems will know how irritating, painful and smelly they can be! They can get blocked easily due to skin issues, upset tummies, weight issues and conformation and this can lead to infections and abcesses. They can be squeezed empty but if it becomes a long term problem or if they become very difficult to express then surgical removal is best. This is little Peanut who has had a**l gland problems for most of his life, and his glands were just getting too painful, so we decided to remove them. First, we pack the gland with special rubbery material so that they are easier to remove, then we carefully dissect them out. Most patients recover really well and quickly and then they never have to have their bums squeezed ever again!

It's Spring and puppies are arriving! Unfortunately little Fig needed our help in 'arriving' her puppies, and 5 gorgeous mini long haired dachund pups were delivered by caesarian section by vet Paul and the nurse team. Mum had heaps of milk ready for her babies and all went home happily with full tummies (except Mum who went home with a much emptier tummy) shortly after surgery. Not sure how the clinic elf got himself into the puppy incubator to keep the puppies company?

More than just a cat fight?? It looked like Rosie had been just standing up for herself and had got a nasty cat bite in her mouth. Luckily our sharp eyed vet Emma spotted something more complicated, and an Xray revealed a tooth root abcess of her lower canine tooth (blue arrow). You can see the tip of the root has rotted away and the infection in the surrounding area has caused the bone to thin and appear more black on the Xray. Althought the tooth looked totally normal from the outside, Rosie had to have it extracted, to prevent the spread of infection. The treatment will stop the pain, but she will have to be careful who she scraps with from now on!

A couple of staff members and their families have had recent encounters with the human health services. Whilst we all appreciate the depth of knowledge our human doctors and nurses have, it is worth giving some thought and appreciation to the breadth of knowledge our veterinarians have. We do our consultations in the morning, then we go on to do some Xrays (and interpret them), or some blood tests (and interpret them), then maybe we have to proceed to surgery or further investigations like ultrasound, endoscopy, biopsies, or joint taps. On top of our role as GP, radiologist, gynaecologist, urologist, trauma surgeon, enterologist and obstetrician; we are still there when the doors close, prepared for out of hours emergencies, and as you can see, we mainly do all this with smiles on our faces, even if we are picking up a poo!!
