It's Spring and puppies are arriving! Unfortunately little Fig needed our help in 'arriving' her puppies, and 5 gorgeous mini long haired dachund pups were delivered by caesarian section by vet Paul and the nurse team. Mum had heaps of milk ready for her babies and all went home happily with full tummies (except Mum who went home with a much emptier tummy) shortly after surgery. Not sure how the clinic elf got himself into the puppy incubator to keep the puppies company?

More than just a cat fight?? It looked like Rosie had been just standing up for herself and had got a nasty cat bite in her mouth. Luckily our sharp eyed vet Emma spotted something more complicated, and an Xray revealed a tooth root abcess of her lower canine tooth (blue arrow). You can see the tip of the root has rotted away and the infection in the surrounding area has caused the bone to thin and appear more black on the Xray. Althought the tooth looked totally normal from the outside, Rosie had to have it extracted, to prevent the spread of infection. The treatment will stop the pain, but she will have to be careful who she scraps with from now on!

A couple of staff members and their families have had recent encounters with the human health services. Whilst we all appreciate the depth of knowledge our human doctors and nurses have, it is worth giving some thought and appreciation to the breadth of knowledge our veterinarians have. We do our consultations in the morning, then we go on to do some Xrays (and interpret them), or some blood tests (and interpret them), then maybe we have to proceed to surgery or further investigations like ultrasound, endoscopy, biopsies, or joint taps. On top of our role as GP, radiologist, gynaecologist, urologist, trauma surgeon, enterologist and obstetrician; we are still there when the doors close, prepared for out of hours emergencies, and as you can see, we mainly do all this with smiles on our faces, even if we are picking up a poo!!

The " Litter tray of doom"! Every morning we have our morning meeting so that all the team know what is happening and when, we can bring up any issues that need fixing and celebrate our good outcomes. Then we have the 'litter tray of doom'! This is a clean litter tray filled with questions; some thought provoking, some philosophical, and some just daft. We all answer to get the day off to an entertaining start. This morning's question was; " Would you rather be blue like a Smurf or green like Shrek. This is what they wished for......

There is something in the air, or maybe something in the intestines, but so far this week 3 separate clients have brought us little presents of worms that their dogs have passed !
We have had both roundworms and tapeworms. It is improtant to remember that most 'Flea and Worm" treatments do not actually kill tapeworm, they just 'control' it by killing the fleas that spread it. However, it depends on your dog's lifestyle and even if they are treated with a combination product can still pick up worms if they eat wild meat or hunt and eat their prey (this generally refers to cats!).
Look at the lifecycles below and see if your pet is at risk. If they are, then you should treat with a 'multiwormer' every 3- 4 months. Also remember worming products do not have any long action, and some pets such as cats that hunt a lot, or dogs being raw fed from homekill, can need to be wormed more frequently.

Bunnies need desexing too! Female rabbits need to be spayed if they are not going to breed, otherwise they are very susceptable to a form of uterus cancer, and male rabbits can just be a bit territorial. Giving bunnies an anaesthetic is challenging as they are very sensitive to the drugs, and we need to place the catheter in an ear vein, they are very prone to getting cold and mustn't stop eating for long. We minimise the risks by keeping them very cosy the whole time with a heated operating table, woolly jumpers and hot hands. We ensure they eat as soon as they come round from anaesthetic by giving them a special rabbit recovery paste and we reverse as much of the anaesthetic as possible. These 2 cuties can now live along side each other without any 'mistakes' arriving!!

Vet teams are so skilled at so many things! Just think how many different staff are involved when you go for a human hospital stay or procedure, then consider that our amazing vet nurses do ALL of those jobs, (apart from the surgery!). They admit the patients, they administer the premedication, prepare pets for surgery, administer and monitor the anaesthesia, then sit giving cuddles while your pet recovers. Then they can get on with, feeding any hungry patients, taking them for a walk, making sure kennels are all lovely and cosy, then reorganising and cleaning the operating theatre and all the instruments. All in a day's work for our highly skilled nurse team.
