Phoenix Animal Wellness in Kerikeri urgently needs a locum.
We need a small animal locum from 22nd June for 2 weeks.
We are a first opinion companion animal clinic offering some referral services. The clinic is well equipped and staffed with a great bunch of vets and nurses. We need a locum with general practice skills so we can keep offering our clients the great service they are used to.
We have all the gear you would associate with a modern small animal practice plus some fun extras. We work very civilised hours and use Ezyvet.
Accommodation is available and the Bay of Islands is a great place to visit for a couple of weeks.
Have a look at our Website; phoenixanimalwellness.co.nz and FB page to see what we get up to.
If you are interested or need more information call Paula on 0210354361 [email protected]

Watch out for poisonings! This poor girl ate a whole box of slug pellets, after flooding caused the owner to move everything around in the garage, leaving the slug pellet box accessible to her. It takes a fair amount of slug pellets to cause a toxic result but a whole box is definitely enough! This girl arrived when starting to seizure so we couldn't make her vomit and had to anaesthetise her to pump her stomach. Whilst we were doing this green poo came out the other end showing us the poison was throughout her whole system. Paul had to stay up all night with her to control the seizures and it took 2 days of intensive care to get her through. She was a very lucky dog and went home very tired but recovered.

Save your precious fuel for something else and let us do the driving!
We are delighted to announce the launch of The Flying Phoenix home visit service. Once each week a vet and nurse team will hit the road and come to an area near you.
Our mobile vet team can perform most of the procedures that we can generally do in a clinic consultation, but there are some limitations.
We can examine your pet and administer injections and vaccinations.
We can perform medicine check ups, and repeat monthly injections eg Cytopoint and Beransa.
We can change and remove bandages.
We can normally take blood samples to take back to the clinic for routine monitoring.
We can see your pet if they are unwell, but if your pet is seriously sick or injured then they need to be seen at the clinic as soon as possible. Likewise if you think your dog will need an x-ray, ultrasound or surgery, then they need to be seen at the clinic.
Our first planned day is Wednesday the 22nd April in the Paihia/Opua area and the second day will be Wednesday 29th April in the Kerikeri area. If you live in the Whangaroa/Mangonui area or the Okaihau area and are interested in this service, please get in touch with the clinic so we can judge demand and plan a visit day. We will expand the service as we judge demand in various locations.
When you book your visit we may need to call you back with an exact visit time once we have created our route and planned our day. Please contact the clinic to book your visit.
Payment will be due at the time of the visit, we will have Eftpos available for card payments or you can pay with cash. There will be an $80 visit fee in addition to any normal consultation or medicine fees.

Pippa Popped out a bit too soon! Vet Jen and Pippa are on their way back from Auckland hospital to Whangarei hospital this afternoon. Little Pippa was born 8 weeks early and needed top notch care. Now she and Jen are ready to get back a bit closer to home. We have lost our awesome vet a bit sooner than planned but we are so excited to see them coming back up North.

Welcome to our new team member, veterinarian Paul, (not to be confused with Paula!).
Paul is a 2019 graduate of Massey University. He started work in the South Island, with his first job being in a Canterbury dairy cattle practice before undertaking mixed practice roles in Oamaru and then Kaikoura. While in the South Island he spent as much time as possible exploring all the mountains and rivers he could.

He then spent time in the UK travelling and undertaking mixed and companion animal locum positions for a year, before he missed New Zealand too much and came back. Having fallen in love with the Bay of Islands (and fishing) while spending his holidays here growing up, on his return at the start of 2025 he decided to move here permanently. He worked in a mixed role again for a year before joining the team at Phoenix to focus on companion animal practice. Paul enjoys working with pets of all species and sizes, but is particularly keen on working dogs.

Outside of work Paul loves being outdoors, and living in Northland to him that means being on the sea.

We all are excited about working with our new vet, his passion and enthusiasm are obvious and contagious, welcome aboard Paul!

This is why we say cats have 9 lives! Poor Nikko was hit by a car and his face hit the road. Most of one side of his chin was completely torn off the bone and he had a deep laceration in his tongue. Luckily he got to us quickly and by using his jaw bone, his remaining teeth and his gums we managed to reattach his face and stitch up his tongue. He is now doing amazingly well and less than 2 weeks later he is nearly all healed up. He will need a bit of dental work to tidy up his broken teeth in a couple of weeks but we are delighted and 'gob smacked' by his recovery. Incidentally when we xrayed him we saw a slug gun pellet lodged in his neck, so he has definitely, already lost a couple of those 9 lives.
