Hi, I’m Rowena, the owner of Leila & Co. Pet Care. 🤍

Animals have been my lifelong passion, and for nearly 20 years I’ve built experience in the animal industry through employment, volunteering, fostering, and caring for my own much-loved animals.

My journey began at 11 years old when I volunteered cleaning rabbit hutches with a local breeder. As a teenager, I wrote my first business plan to become a pet sitter, and from there my passion only continued to grow.

After leaving school, I worked as a dog groomer, including within a veterinary clinic where I gained valuable clinical experience alongside grooming (and was introduced to the world of cat grooming). I later managed a busy pet store in Christchurch before spending a number of years with the SPCA leading volunteer and foster programmes. During that time, I was privileged to work with an incredible variety of animals, from neonatal kittens and dogs requiring rehabilitation through to livestock and equine.

My career then took a change of scenery into emergency services, where I’ve spent the last seven years with Fire and Emergency New Zealand. While my professional path changed direction, my passion for animals never did, and I continued volunteering, fostering, and surrounding myself with them whenever I could.

I live in Ruby Bay and share my home with my partner, his two kids, and my pride and joy, Leila (Shih Tzu x) - the inspiration behind this business. We also have three cats, a tortoise, tropical fish, three horses and five goats.

Leila’s own health journey over the past 12 years has given me a real appreciation for how important the right people are when trusting someone with our pets. She has inspired my approach to animal care and is the reason Leila & Co. exists today.

My goal is to provide the kind of service I would want for my own animals – one that is patient, personalised, and always puts their wellbeing first. Whether I’m grooming your dog, cat, rabbit or caring for your pets while you’re away, every animal is treated as if they were one of my own, and I never take that trust for granted.

Choosing the Right Groomer for Your Dog 🐾

Not every dog thrives in the same grooming environment.

Some dogs are perfectly happy in busy salons, while others do better with a quieter, one-on-one approach. The right groomer for your dog isn’t necessarily the most popular, it’s the one that’s the right fit for your dog’s personality and needs.

One of the easiest ways to tell is by watching your dog after their groom. While most dogs will be tired, they should still seem relaxed, comfortable, and willing to return next time.

For puppies, senior dogs, anxious pets, or those with health concerns, slowing things down and working at their pace can make all the difference.

My dog Leila has been my best friend and fur child for the past 12 years.Throughout her life we’ve navigated skin conditions, heart disease, eye issues and arthritis together, which has given me a real appreciation for how important it is to find the right people to trust with our pets.

That’s why I started Leila & Co.

I wanted to create a personalised service for owners who, like me, worry about how their pets will cope in a busy salon environment. A service where every pet is treated as if they were my own, with low-stress handling, patience, and care tailored to their individual needs.

By bringing pet care to your home, I can provide a more comfortable experience for your pet and a more convenient one for you.

I’m excited to now be offering pet sitting services throughout Upper Moutere and surrounding areas.

With nearly 20 years of experience through animal care, volunteering, and managing a wide variety of my own animals, I understand how important it is to find someone you can trust. Every pet in my care is treated as if they were my own, allowing them to stay safe, comfortable, and relaxed in their familiar environment while you’re away.

As someone who previously groomed in a salon attached to a vet clinic, I saw firsthand how stressful those environments could be for many cats. The smells, noises and presence of dogs can be overwhelming, especially for nervous or older felines.

That’s why creating a calm, low-stress experience has always been important to me, one that I’d want for my own pets too.
