❌ MYTH: "If my dog is on daily pain medication for osteoarthritis, it will mask their symptoms and cause them to overexert themselves, leading to more joint damage."

FACT:
Pain management is essential for breaking the cycle of chronic pain and inflammation. When a dog's pain is unmanaged, they tend to move less, leading to muscle wasting (atrophy) and stiffness. Unmanaged pain can also cause central sensitisation- where the nervous system becomes hypersensitive to pain signals over time.

Properly managed pain allows dogs to comfortably engage in controlled, low-impact exercise (like gentle walking or hydrotherapy), which builds supporting muscle tissue and preserves joint mobility. Rather than masking a problem, targeted pain relief helps maintain physical health and improves quality of life.

We promised we would take you on Louis's rehab journey and look at him go with his first Hydrotherapy session with me at Black Dog Physio πŸ₯°πŸ˜ HUHANZ

For those that are new Louis has mild Hip Dysplasia and MPL(Medial Petalla Luxation) grade 2 🦴

We aren't worrying about perfect gait and perfect muscle activation in our first session but rather allowing him time to get used to this new and wonderful experience!

What does that mean?
🐾 Lots of reassurance
🐾 Lots of tasty treats
🐾 Moving at a slower speed allowing him chance to process
🐾 Doing our best to make it a joyful experience

I love showing owners comparisons of their dogs first Hydrotherapy session to their 3rd, 10th, 100th. 🀣 and letting them see first hand how far their doggos have come. We can't wait to see Mr Louis Magoos progress! πŸ˜‰

YES πŸ™ŒπŸ‘

Myth: "Integrative therapies like hydrotherapy or clinical massage are just optional 'luxury spa treatments' for dogs."

THE FACT: They are essential, evidence-backed medical interventions. Arthritis may begin in a single joint, but it quickly becomes a whole-body disease. Because dogs naturally alter their posture and movement patterns to shift weight away from chronic pain, they develop severe secondary muscle soreness, tension, and joint stiffness elsewhere.

The Takeaway: Physical therapies don't just pamper a companion; they actively manage this compensatory pain, improve lubricating joint fluid movement, and safely preserve functional range of motion to slow down structural declines.
